D’une superficie de 225 000 ha, la Réserve de biosphère de Yangambi (République démocratique du Congo) est l’une des principales aires protégées menacées par l’anthropisation dans la région. Malgré son appartenance au réseau mondial des réserves de biosphère depuis les années 1970, les connaissances sur les dynamiques d’occupation du sol y sont encore lacunaires. Une démarche fondée sur l’analyse d’images (Landsat TM, ETM+ et OLI) et la réalité du terrain a été mise en œuvre pour étudier la dynamique d’occupation des sols de la réserve entre 1986 et 2016. Le taux annuel de déforestation est passé de 0,18 % au cours de la période 1986-2003 à 0,38 % en 2003-2016. Durant cette dernière période, la forêt primaire a connu un taux de déforestation plus élevé qu’en forêt secondaire (respectivement 4,5 % et 0,4 %). Quatre zones aux dynamiques socio-environnementales spécifiques ont été identifiées, nécessitant des approches de gestion différentes. Il s’agit notamment de la concession de l’INERA, des zones proches d’axes principaux de circulation, des zones situées sur des axes routiers plus ou moins abandonnés et des zones isolées du cœur de la réserve. Les principales causes de déforestation mentionnées par les habitants sont l’agriculture itinérante sur brûlis (54 % des ménages), l’exploitation artisanale des minerais (17 %) et la fabrication des pirogues (8 %). La pression démographique, sans amélioration du niveau de vie des communautés ou des techniques agricoles, et le développement du réseau routier, favorisant les échanges commerciaux, en sont les causes sous-jacentes. Cette dynamique de déforestation dans une forêt rattachée au réseau mondial des réserves de biosphère entame l’objectif fixé par l’État d’étendre le réseau d’aires protégées à 15 % du territoire national.

The North-East region (Bounkani) of Côte d'Ivoire is the least watered region of the country with an average annual rainfall of 945 mm. The rainfall deficits observed in Côte d'Ivoire since 1970s could constitute a real threat to the environment and to water resources in general, and to dam lakes in particular. The main aim of this study was to follow the evolution of the dam lakes in the region over the years, i.e,(1986, 2002 and 2017) with reference to their spatial distribution (their densities and their limnological ratios). The approach adopted consisted of mapping and monitoring through remote sensing technology which involves processing satellite images for automatic extraction of these agropastoral structures on the various images. The results showed that these dam lakes were unevenly distributed both at the level of the departments and the watersheds, with 73.43% in the Black Volta and 28.57% in the Comoé. The density was higher in Doropo and varied from one department to another from 1986 to 2017, for the department of Bouna, it ranged from 9.34.10-4 to 3.74.10-3 per km2. The departments of Doropo and Tehini showed 1.51.10-3 to 1.01.10-2 per km2 and 1.05.10-3 to 4.53.10-3 per km2 respectively. Nassian department displayed a value of 1.42.10-3 per km2 and remained constant from 2002 to 2017. Like the density, Doropo Department had the highest limnological ratio which changes from 7.09.10-5 to 2.71.10-4 per km2 over the same period. The mapping of these agropastoral structures showed 18 agropastoral structures where 57 (28.07%) were functional or even contained water in the dry season in the region in 2017 including 2 in Nassian; 4 in Tehini; 9 in Doropo and 3 in Bouna.

Protected areas and biodiversity are currently facing important degradation, especially in tropical regions. This evolution questions the management systems and calls for adaptive and sustainable management on the basis of regular assessments of global evolutionary trends and continuous adjustments of conservation objectives and management tools. Adaptive management is yet missing rigorous and integrated indicators for advanced evaluations for many protected areas which have never been assessed despite periodical updating of management goals and plans. The development of reliable, global and low cost methods for adaptive management is therefore a great concern for scientific and conservationist communities given the limitations of commonly used tools and recurrent problems of conservation funding. The PA-TAMCO Analytic Model was designed to promote adaptive actions and management considering spatialized, categorized and aggregated changes from advanced global evaluations. It is an innovative approach and tool for protected areas' global evolutionary trends with reference to conservation objectives. Theoretically, the Model is based on land cover concepts and land cover analysis recognized as the most practical approach to assess ecosystem units, with reference to vegetation cover, natural processes and theoretical spatial changes. Basically, it relies on four key indicators and tools: (1) Trend Index, (2) Evolutionary Trend, (3) Evolutionary Trend's Decision Tree Algorithm and (4) Trend Index and Evolutionary Trend's Classification Grid. Technically, it is based on Remote Sensing data processing; land cover mapping and land cover change analysis using appropriated Remote Sensing and GIS Softwares. The spatial indices and processes responsible for recorded evolutionary trends are determined using landscape ecology tools. In the field of conservation, positive processes are respectively positive and negative when they affect vegetation classes and anthropogenic classes and vice-versa, for negative ones. The input data for the computation of evolution indicators and spatial processes are derived from raw export results of the classifications of Remote Sensing data to GIS software. The sensitivity and resilience of specific ecosystems units to external stresses are measured by three indicators that are "intrinsic stability" (S i), "weighted stability" (S w) and "relative expansion rate" (R e). These indicators are essential for rational management of strategic ecosystems like savannah, water bodies and wetlands in animal sanctuaries and wildlife parks. The implementation of the Model starts with the knowledge of management category, conservation objectives and desired evolutions. The validation process relies on semi-structured interviews involving technical staff and oldest rangers. The model was successfully applied to the Rusizi National Park (Burundi) from 1984 and 2015.
