Quality of obturation achieved by an endodontic core-carrier system with crosslinked gutta-percha carrier in single-rooted canals

Abstract: Objectives The present study examined the quality of obturation in root canals obturated by GuttaCore, a gutta-percha-based core-carrier system with a cross-linked thermoset gutta-percha carrier, by comparing the incidence of gaps and voids identified from similar canals obturated by cold lateral compaction or warm vertical compaction. Methods Thirty single-rooted premolars with oval-shaped canals were shaped and cleaned, and obturated with one of the three obturation techniques (N=10): GuttaCore, warm verti… Show more

“…This difference might be related to the filling technique as compaction of warm gutta‐percha or cross‐linked gutta‐percha core‐carrier systems resulted in a significantly greater percentage of gutta‐percha filled areas and fewer voids than cold lateral compaction (Li et al . , Schäfer et al . ), thus resulting in a less effective removal of thermoplasticized gutta‐percha.…”

“…Retreatment of curved roots filled with laterally compacted guttapercha with Hedstr€ om files, Reciproc, ProTaper Retreatment or D-RaCe resulted in 3.7-11.3% residual filling material (R€ odig et al 2012, 2014). This difference might be related to the filling technique as compaction of warm gutta-percha or cross-linked gutta-percha core-carrier systems resulted in a significantly greater percentage of gutta-percha filled areas and fewer voids than cold lateral compaction (Li et al 2014, Sch€ afer et al 2016, thus resulting in a less effective removal of thermoplasticized gutta-percha. Retreatment of oval root canals with ProTaper Retreatment files filled using the continuous wave of condensation technique resulted in more remaining filling material than root canals filled with cold laterally compacted gutta-percha (Ma et al 2012).…”

“…Several studies have evaluated root canal filling quality for various obturation techniques, using scanning electron microscopy, µ-CT, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (13,(22)(23)(24)(25)(26). Marciano et al (22) used confocal laser scanning microscopy to compare four techniques (SC, LC, system B, Thermafil).…”
