Objectives: To determine the prevalence, risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI) and to assess its impact on the quality of women’s life. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed 1050 female participants aged between 20-80 years. A questionnaire form, including the socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors and the "International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form" were used for the data collection. Results: The mean age of women was 48.80±11.53 years. The prevalence of UI was 44.6%. The distribution of the types of UI was 31% stress incontinence, 47.4% urge, and 33.1% mixed type. Although 95.5% of the women reported a negative impact on the quality of life, admission to a health center was only 63.9%, and 64.7% of the women had not received any medical help. The statistical analysis revealed that menopause, constipation, hypertension, diabetes, family history and parity are associated with UI as risk factors. Conclusion: We suggest that in the early diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence (UI), mental, educational and psychosocial support should be given to patients together with medical therapy.

ResumoOBJETIVO: Identificar o impacto da incontinência urinária (IU) sobre a qualidade de vida (QV), comparar os escores dos domínios de QV em mulheres com incontinência de esforço (IUE), bexiga hiperativa (BH) e incontinência mista (IUM) e estabelecer a associação entre o tipo clínico de IU e o impacto sobre a QV. MÉTODOS: Foram coletadas informações sobre idade, índice de massa corpórea (IMC) e comorbidades de 181 mulheres incontinentes atendidas em serviço público. O King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) foi aplicado e as pacientes foram divididas, de acordo com a autoavaliação do impacto da incontinência, em dois grupos, cujos escores dos domínios do KHQ foram comparados pelo teste de Mann-Whitney. De acordo com os sintomas, as mulheres foram divididas nos grupos IUE, BH e IUM, e os escores do KHQ foram comparados pelos testes de Kruskal-Wallis e de Dunn. As razões de chances (OR) de a mulher reportar pior impacto da IU na QV foram estimadas por modelo logístico binário. As variáveis de controle foram faixa etária, IMC e número de comorbidades. RESULTADOS: Observou-se diferença significante entre os dois grupos de autoavaliação do impacto da IU para todos os domínios do KHQ. O grupo IUM apresentou piores escores que o grupo IUE para todos os domínios, e o grupo BH, para limitações de atividades diárias e físicas. Houve diferença significante entre as chances de as mulheres dos grupos IUE e IUM reportarem pior impacto de IU na QV (OR=2,9; p=0,02). CONCLUSÃO: Assim como em outras populações de serviços especializados, a IUM foi o subtipo mais comum, e a perda urinária comprometeu de forma moderada/grave a QV, afetando o domínio limitações das atividades diárias com maior intensidade. A análise ajustada mostrou que mulheres com IUM apresentam chance aproximadamente três vezes maior de reportarem pior impacto sobre a QV que aquelas com IUE. Abstract PURPOSE:To identify the impact of urinary incontinence (UI) on quality of life (QoL), to compare the scores of QoL domains in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), overactive bladder (OAB) and mixed incontinence (MUI) and to establish the association between the clinical type of UI and the impact on QoL. METHODS: Data of 181 incontinent women attended at a public hospital were collected regarding age, body mass index (BMI) and co-morbidities. King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) was applied and patients were classified into two groups according to the self-assessment of incontinence impact. KHQ scores were compared by the Mann-Whitney test. Depending on their urinary symptoms, women were divided into SUI, OAB and MUI groups and their scores in the KHQ domains were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. The odds ratio (OR) of a woman reporting a worse effect of UI on QoL was estimated using the binary logistic model. The control variables were: age, BMI and number of co-morbidities. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the patient and urinary incontinence-related factors affecting help seeking behavior of Turkish women with undiagnosed urinary incontinence STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 490 female patients aged >18 years old and were seen in general gynecology outpatients' clinic of Denizli State Hospital. According to referral complaint and results of UDI-6 questionnaire, the participants were classified into 3 groups: Group A: Help seeker patient, Group B: Non help seeker patient and Group C: Continent patient. RESULTS:Overall urinary incontinence prevalence was 24%. Nearly two thirds (67%) of the urinary incontinence patients do not complain about their urinary incontinence symptoms unless they were asked specifically about urinary incontinence. Consultation rate increased with age, duration of incontinence, menopause and the severity of urinary incontinence. After logistic regression analyses, only increasing age, UDI-6 score and severity (SSI) were found to be associated independently with help seeking behavior. CONCLUSIONS:This study showed that, older, more bothered and severe urinary incontinence patients visit physician and seek medical help. Still nearly half of women who are suffering from clinically significant urinary incontinence remain undiagnosed and untreated. Regardless the visiting reason if its asked specifically for urinary incontinence symptoms by using simple questionnaires, we can reveal and diagnose this patients' group who is suffering from urinary incontinence but yet keeps it disguise.
