Background Menopause is one of the natural phenomena in every woman’s life. The transition phase gradually brings lots of changes in the life of women, both physically and mentally. In Nepal, these changes are often viewed as the symptoms of old age. This study aims to determine the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and their quality of life (QOL). Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural municipality of Jhapa district, Nepal, with study samples of 215 collected using purposive sampling technique. Semistructured questionnaire and MENQOL questionnaire were used for data collection. Descriptive (mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics (t-test and ANOVA test) were used for data analysis. The confidence interval was taken as 95% and probability of significance at p < 0.05. Results The study showed that the mean age of the respondents was 53.51 ± 4.42 years with the mean age at menopause being 47.18 ± 6.16 years. The most prevalent symptoms among postmenopausal women were feeling tired or worn out (98.8%), followed by decrease in stamina (94%), decrease in physical strength (91.2%) and lack of energy (90%). The highest mean score was seen in physical domain (2.88 ± 1.61) followed by sexual (2.77 ± 1.93), vasomotor (2.65 ± 1.84) and psychosocial (2.45 ± 1.55). The overall mean score of QOL was found to be 80.06 ± 24.52. Marital status, number of children, educational status, occupational status and health seeking behaviour had significant association with the QOL score. Conclusion The most common symptoms experienced by the postmenopausal women were the physical symptoms followed by sexual, vasomotor and psychosocial. Presence of these symptoms certainly affects the QOL. Hence, effective awareness and education programme regarding the symptoms and ways to minimize those symptoms should be planned and provided both at individual and community levels.

Background: Menopause poses a big challenge during middle age and to the healthy aging of woman. Majority of women face various problems and disturbances in daily living leading to decrease in quality of life. This study focuses on menopause related symptoms and quality of life in relation to the symptoms. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 women of age 40-60 years at Dharan Sub-metropolitan City of Nepal selected through snowball sampling technique. The data were collected over the period of four weeks. Semi- structured questionnaire for demographic variables and menopause specific quality of life (MENQOL) questionnaire were used to collect data. Interview technique was adapted. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to interpret data. Result: Mean menopausal age of the study group was 47.14 years. The most common symptoms of vasomotor, psychosocial, physical and sexual domains were hot flushes, experiencing poor memory, feeling tired or worn out and change in sexual desire respectively. The overall score of menopausal quality of life for each domain reported that highest the mean score in sexual domain (3.58 ± 1.62) and least score in vasomotor domain (2.08 ± 1.67). The score of physical domain was significantly high in late postmenopausal group than early postmenopausal group. Significant association was obtained with age, ethnicity, menopause status, physical activity and marital status in relation to the domains of quality of life. Conclusions: The results conclude that all the menopausal women were having at least one menopausal symptom from each domain. The menopausal women scored highest in sexual domain and least in vasomotor domain suggesting decrease quality of life in relation to sexual domain. Menopausal symptoms were associated with decrease in quality of life. Thus awareness regarding the menopausal changes should be focused in premenopausal age group of women

Introduction Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation. Quality of life is a broad concept affected by an individual’s physical health, psychological state, level of independence, societal relationship, and environmental features. During the menopausal period, women can experience various symptoms affecting their quality of life. This study assesses the factors associated with health-related quality of life among menopausal women. Materials and methods A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 249 menopausal women to assess their health-related quality of life, associated factors, and self-reported health problems. A pre-tested structured interview schedule was used to conduct face-to-face interviews to obtain the information per the study’s objective. The Menopausal Rating Scale (MRS) was used to assess the health-related quality of life. Data was entered in Epi-data, and analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were carried out to obtain results per our objectives. Results The study found that 51.4% of menopausal women had poor quality of life. The mean and standard deviation of the total MRS score was found to be 9.5±5.3. Ultimately, the factors such as educational attainment {Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 5.779, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 2.029–16.459}, medication/treatment of the health problems (AOR = 4.828, 95% CI: 1.662–14.023), alcohol intake status (AOR = 8.006, 95% CI: 2.016–31.785) and physical activity (AOR = 5.746, 95% CI: 1.144–28.872) were significant determinants of quality of life among menopausal women. Conclusion There is a need to pay proper attention to factors affecting the quality of life to improve the status of menopausal women.
