Quality of Life of Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis in Relation to Hemoglobin Level: A Multicenter Study from a Developing Country

Abstract: Background: Anemia is common in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and is associated with impaired quality of life (QOL). This study was done to evaluate the QOL of ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) with different levels of hemoglobin (Hb).Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to December 2013 on 135 adult ESRD patients on MHD for ?4 months, at hemodialysis units of three tertiary care hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The patients were divided into three groups b… Show more

“…This study explored that mean (±SD) score of overall HRQOL was 47.07 (±14.89) which was higher (53.8472±13.60) in KDCS followed by MCS (45.9986±21.06) and PCS (41.3501±14.92). A study using the same scale found the mean score of overall HRQOL was 50.0±17.0 [24]. This is little more than the finding of the present study.…”

“…17 Previous study by Saha SK et al, comprising 135 dialysis patients from 3 centers of Dhaka city, which reported better HRQOL life among Haemoglobin>11gm/dL. 10 Other studies evaluating HRQOL in CKD patients with clinico-demographic factors showed, impact of factors like Diabetes Mellitus, Cardiovascular Disease , age, hepatitis C virus positivity , female gender, socio economic condition , malnutrition, inflammation and residual renal function . 14,[18][19][20][21] Lower PCS and MCS were found in females in comparison to male in our study, which were the similar findings in other studies.…”

“…And at the end, they found better HRQOL scores in erythropoietin only group. 10 But their study did not evaluate the influencing factors for HRQOL. For a better understanding of the influencing factors for HRQOL, this study aims to evaluate the influence of socio demographic and clinical parameters on the quality of life in ESRD patients.…”

“…In this study, anaemia and a high daily pill burden were independently associated with impaired functional status. Saha et al found a positive correlation between higher haemoglobin levels and better quality of life [ 25 ], while correction of anaemia, even sub-optimally by the use of EPO improved physical function and energy [ 26 ]. The association with a high daily pill burden may be explained by the fact that patients with an impaired functional status usually have multiple comorbidities and may therefore have multiple drug prescriptions.…”
