Background Despite the critical need, interventions aimed at frailty in sub-Saharan Africa are scarce, attributed to factors such as insufficient healthcare infrastructure, the pressing need to address infectious diseases, maternal and child health issues, and a general lack of awareness. Hence, the aim of this research was to develop, implement, and evaluate the effect of a nurse-led program on frailty and associated health outcomes in community-dwelling older individuals in Ethiopia. Methods This study utilised a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up single-group quasi-experimental design. The main outcome measure was to determine changes in the frailty levels of older individuals living in communities at three different intervals: initially (T0), immediately after the intervention (T1), and 12 weeks following the intervention (T2). Secondary outcomes were the observed changes in daily living activities, nutritional status, depression levels, and quality of life (QOL), evaluated at each of these data collection points. To analyse changes in frailty and response variables over these periods, Friedman’s ANOVA and Cochran’s Q test were employed, setting the threshold for statistical significance at P < 0.05. Results Sixty-six older people with a high adherence rate of 97% completed the intervention and the follow-up measurements. Participants had an average age of 66.7 ± 7.9 years, with females comprising 79.4% of the group. Notably, 12 weeks post-intervention, there was a marked decrease in frailty (χ2(2) = 101.05, p < 0.001) and depression scores (χ2(2) = 9.55, p = 0.008) compared to the baseline. However, the changes in depression, physical, mental, and environmental domains of QOL were not sustained for 12 weeks post-intervention. Study participants showed an improvement in nutritional status (χ2(2) = 25.68, p < 0.001), activity of daily living (χ2(2) = 6.00, p = 0.05), and global quality of life (χ2(2) = 20.64, p < 0.001). Conclusions The nurse-led intervention notably, 12 weeks post-intervention reduced frailty and depression. The intervention improved the nutritional status and some components of the quality of life of the participants. There is a need for further studies, especially with larger participant groups and stronger research designs such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Objective Dermatological consultation plays an important role in diagnosing and treating skin diseases in the Department of Geriatrics. The objective of this study is to provide an analysis of the factors leading geriatric inpatients to seek dermatological consultation, aiming to facilitate accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of skin diseases by healthcare professionals specializing in geriatrics and dermatology. Methods The electronic health records of hospitalized patients in the Department of Geriatrics who applied for dermatological consultation at the Second Hospital of Shandong University from June 1, 2022, to June 1, 2023, were retrieved. Sex, age, number of consultations, reason for dermatology consultation, and final diagnosis by dermatologists were reviewed. Results A total of 216 consultations of 178 patients (n=178, 95 men and 83 women) were collected in this study, of whom 153 (86.0%) required only one consultation, 19 (10.7%) required two consultations, and 4 (2.2%) required three consultations. The reasons for dermatology consultations were divided into three categories: the first was for the definitive diagnosis of a new skin condition that developed during the patient’s hospitalization (n=165, 76.4%), the second was for the follow-up of the condition and adjustment of medication (n=40, 18.5%), and the third was for the evaluation of the patient’s disease that existed before admission to the hospital (n=11, 5.1%). In 165 consultations, most of these diseases (n=131, 79.4%) can be diagnosed by patients’ conscious symptoms and clinical manifestations. Some of them need to be diagnosed or differentially diagnosed with the help of supplementary examinations, such as microscopic examination of scabies or fungi, and pathological examination. Conclusion This study summarized the reasons for dermatology consultations for geriatric inpatients and found that dermatitis/eczema and infectious diseases were the common types of diseases consulted. The findings of this study contribute to the enhanced comprehension and management of dermatological conditions in hospitalized patients by geriatricians, as well as facilitating more efficient diagnosis and treatment by dermatologists.

Background: While social media continues to dominate, social media platforms have become powerful health communication tools for older users. However, fulfilling their social media needs can be both detrimental and beneficial to their quality of life (QoL). This study assessed social media needs as they relate to QoL among older adults in Malaysia. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and adopted convenience sampling to recruit participants. The participants were required to self-report their sociodemographic profile, social media use and needs, and QoL. Social media use and needs were assessed using the Social Networking Sites Uses and Needs (SNSUN) scale, and QoL was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was performed to identify the predictors of QoL. Results: The findings revealed that the fulfilment of social integrative needs was the strongest predictor of higher QoL in all domains. However, those using social media for their affective needs demonstrated lower psychological health quality. Conclusions: Fulfilling social integrative needs is the key to improving the QoL among older adults. The continuous development of age-friendly applications is essential to keep up with constantly changing social media trends and bridge the gap of social media inequalities. More importantly, it would enable older adults to utilize social media to its fullest potential and enjoy a higher QoL through accessible health communication tools.
