BackgroundPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most prevalent long-term psychiatric disorders among survivors of traumatic events. It is well established that social support has been related to the onset of PTSD after natural disasters. However, very little is known whether or not social support has had an influence on the recovery from the PTSD that was diagnosed after floods. This study, therefore, made a follow-up assessment of PTSD in flood victims 13–14 years after they were diagnosed with PTSD in 2000 to measure the prevalence rate of PTSD among them and identify the association between social support and their recovery from PTSD.MethodsVictims who had experienced Dongting Lake flood in 1998 and had been diagnosed as having PTSD in 2000 were enrolled in this study. A follow-up survey was done between the years 2013 and 2014 to diagnose the victims again of PTSD using the DSM-IV criteria. Social support and its three dimensions were measured using the Chinese version of Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), including objective support, subjective support and support utilization. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between social support and the recovery from PTSD after flood.ResultsOut of 321 subjects with prior PTSD, 51 (15.89 %) were diagnosed as still having PTSD. Logistic regression analyses indicated that the recovery from prior PTSD was significantly associated with social support (odds ratio (OR) =0.202, 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI): 0.047–0.878), subjective support (OR = 0.236, 95 % CI: 0.080–0.694) and support utilization (OR = 0.245, 95 % CI: 0.071–0.844).ConclusionsThe prevalence rate of current PTSD indicates that natural disasters, such as floods, may affect the mental health of victims for a long time. Social support was significantly associated with the recovery from prior PTSD, especially subjective support and support utilization.

Background: Living arrangements have impact on life satisfaction among older adults. However, the mechanism how it works has received less attention. This study aims to examine the mediating role of meaning in life and social support in the relationship between living arrangements and life satisfaction. Methods: A total of 215 older adults from nine nursing homes and three communities were included in this study. The Social Support Rating Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire and Life Satisfaction Index A were adopted. Data were analyzed with Hayes' s bias-corrected bootstrapping method.Results: Both social support and presence of meaning in life had positive correlations with life satisfaction (p< 0.001), and they were significant mediators between living arrangements and life satisfaction (p<0.01). Conclusion: To improve the life satisfaction of nursing home residents, more emphasis should be placed on encouraging residents to seek or maintain a meaningful life and creating a more positive climate of social support.

Objective The study aim was to evaluate health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) and to explore factors associated with poor HRQoL in patients with osteoporosis in Jordan. Methods The validated EQ‐5D questionnaire was used to assess HRQoL in outpatients with osteoporosis at the Royal Medical Services Hospital in Jordan. The EQ‐5D is a standardised instrument that has been widely used in clinical studies for evaluating generic health status. Sociodemographic and medical data were collected using custom‐designed questionnaire and hospital medical files. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to build a model with variables associated with poor HRQoL. Key findings The mean score of the total EQ‐5D index of the 296 participants was 0.620. Most of the participants reported ‘some problems’ through the five dimensions, with the highest percentage (72.3%) related to pain/discomfort domain. Regression analysis identified serum vitamin D level (OR = 0.942; CI = 0.891–0.996), number of current medications (OR = 1.273; CI = 1.015–1.597), having movement restriction (OR = 2.525; CI = 1.131–5.638), having spine kyphosis (OR = 5.746; CI = 1.796–18.386) and the presence of friend or family member to remind the patient to take the medications (OR = 3.364; CI = 1.394–8.114) as being significantly associated with poor HRQoL. Conclusion The HRQoL has considerable scope for improvement in patients with osteoporosis in the present study. Future osteoporosis management programmes should focus on improving HRQoL with specific attention to be given for patients with low serum vitamin D level, patients receiving multiple medications, patients having movement restriction, patients having spine kyphosis and those who have no friend or family member to remind them to take the medication.
