Quality of Life Instruments and Trajectories After Pancreatic Cancer Resection

Abstract: This systematic review aimed to investigate the instruments available to measure quality of life (QOL) after pancreatic cancer surgery and to describe short-and long-term QOL outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was completed using PubMed, Embase, and Medline from inception to March 2019. Studies investigating QOL outcomes in patients undergoing pancreatic cancer surgery who were 18 years or older were included. The main outcomes of interest were QOL instruments and short (≤6 months) and long term (>6 m… Show more

“…Primary outcomes of the study were: (1) short-term impact of treatment on HRQOL; (2) long-term impact of treatment on HRQOL. Based on available literature, short-term HRQOL was defined as HRQOL scores within 6 months after treatment [ 19 ]. Long-term HRQOL was defined as HRQOL scores more than 6 months after treatment.…”

“…In recent decades, a growing number of researchers have been paying attention to GI cancer patients’ QoL, including the development, translation, and validation of measurement tools [ [8] , [9] , [10] ], the investigation of the current status and influencing factors of QoL [ 11 , 12 ], the exploration of pathways that affect QoL [ 13 , 14 ], the trial of treatment methods [ 15 , 16 ] and interventions [ 17 , 18 ] for QoL. Although there have been some qualitative reviews summarizing the efficacy of treatment methods [ 19 , 20 ], the effectiveness of interventions such as diet, exercise, and nursing modes [ [21] , [22] , [23] ], as well as the measurement tools [ 24 , 25 ], status [ 24 , 26 ], and influencing factors [ [27] , [28] , [29] ] of QoL, the research direction and hotspots in this field are still unclear, and the bibliometric method has not been applied to quantitatively describe the research status of QoL for GI cancer survivors.…”

“…5 QoL is of major importance in these patients for both patient selection and counseling on realistic postoperative expectations. The vast majority of the literature has focused on malignant indications for this surgery, 6,7 and comparisons between malignant and benign indications are limited. In addition, Ten additional questions pertaining to physical wellbeing were answered on a "yes" or "no" format, or a quantity was specified.…”
