Background: Psychosocial distress interferes with the ability to cope effectively with cancer, its physical symptoms and treatment. This in turn leads to poor outcomes in patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of psychosocial distress on the quality of life of cancer patients in two health facilities in Cameroon. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional hospital-based design. The study was carried out over a period of three months from July-September 2020. The sample size was 120 cancer patients. A purposive sampling technique was used to recruit participants. Three validated questionnaires were used: DT, HADS and EORTC QLQ-C30 to assess, psychosocial distress, emotional distress and quality of life respectively. Results were presented using descriptive (frequency, percentage, mean) and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation, ANOVA). Data were analysed with SPSS version 21. All statistics were considered significant at an alpha value set at 0.05 level. Results: Majority of the patients 83 (69.2%) presented with clinically significant distress, with financial difficulties 87 (72.5%), fatigue 83 (69.2%), transportation 73 (60.8%) and difficulties with work/school 69(57.5%) being the most reported problems. Fifty nine (50.0%) and 56(47.5%) had moderate to severe anxiety and depression symptoms respectively. Overall on HADS, 67 patients (56.8%) presented with emotional distress. The quality of life was fair, with a mean of 52.4±21.3. There was a strong statistically significant relationship between psychosocial distress and the quality of life (P<0.0001), wherein psychosocial distress was found to have a negative impact on the quality of life of patients.Conclusion: Cancer patients do suffer from psychosocial distress which has a negative impact on their quality of life. This is thus a call for concern to health personnel in this setting. The psychosocial domain of cancer patients needs to be assessed for early identification of persons at risk, to better improve the quality of care which they receive and hence their quality of life.

The incidence of cancer across the globe has shown that the disease is a leading cause of death worldwide; and it accounted for 7.6 million deaths, which is about 13% of all deaths in 2018. Also, deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to be rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030. In spite of the efforts of stakeholders to control the prevalence and incidence of cancer, there still increase in reported cases of cancer incidence in Nigeria. Previous studies mainly focused on psychological and social variables as they affect cancer and cancer patients; while little concentration was made on personal factors of age, gender, marital and employment status in relation to quality of life of cancer patients, particularly in Nigeria. This study, therefore, examined personal factors as predictors of quality of life of cancer patients in Southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design of correlational type. The population for this study consisted of all the diagnosed cancer patients who are attending clinics in the South West of Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select 312 patients who were willing and able to participate in the study. A validated questionnaire was used for data collection; which yielded a reliability value of 0.88. Data were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages for demographic characteristics, while multiple linear regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. There was a significant joint prediction of personal factors on quality of life of cancer patients in Southwestern Nigeria (F (4,307) =101.078; p<0.05). Age (β=0.275, p>0.05), gender (β=0.537, p>0.05), employment status (β=0.236, p>0.05) and marital status (β=0.242, p>0.05) independently had no significant prediction on quality of life of cancer patients in Southwestern Nigeria. There was a significant joint prediction of personal factors on quality of life of cancer patients in Southwestern Nigeria. It was also concluded that age, gender, employment and marital status independently had no significant prediction on quality of life of cancer patients in the study area.

Background: Breast Carcinoma (BCa) is the leading cause of cancer among females in Trinidad and Tobago (TnT). This twin-island has a diversified population of 1.3 million individuals that display and are exposed to a variety of lifestyle choices that have been linked to the development of BCa. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the risk factors that influence the development of BCa, analyze the common histopathological details, and categorize BCa based on receptor study. Methods: Cancer information for 120 BCa cases at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex from 2012 to 2019 was retrieved, analyzed, and statistically estimated. The clinical details were categorized based on data tabulations, and histological assessment was performed to identify specific features. The receptor analysis was classified based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor-2 (HER-2neu) staining intensity. A descriptive data analysis and comparison were statistically evaluated in all these cases. Results: Epidemiological factors influencing the development of BCa were age with a peak of 56–65 years 27.5% (n = 33), ethnicity predominated in Indo-Trinidadians 48.33% (n = 58), and marital status primarily in unmarried/single/widowed patients 55% (n = 66). Infiltrating ductal carcinoma was the principal histopathological type 91.66% (n = 110). Receptor analysis revealed ER/PR + HER-2neu as the most common type 40% (n = 18) for therapeutic surveillance. Conclusion: This study highlights various epidemiological factors that influence the development of BCa among females in TnT. Histopathological analysis and receptor studies would provide a useful link between the tumor behavior and its prognosis.
