Quality of Life in Thyroid Cancer is Similar to That of Other Cancers with Worse Survival

Abstract: We found the self-reported QOL of thyroid cancer survivors in our study population is overall similar to or worse than that of survivors of other types of cancer surveyed with the same instrument. This should heighten awareness of the significance of a thyroid cancer diagnosis and highlights the need for further research in how to improve care for this enlarging group of patients.

“…Despite a 98% 5-year survival rate, a recent study by Applewhite et al found that quality of life of thyroid cancer survivors was worse than expected; it was similar to patients with colon cancer, glioma, and gynecologic cancer, and worse than patients with breast cancer [5]. Furthermore, some cases of well-differentiated thyroid cancer are significantly more aggressive than others, making it difficult to predict a patient's course.…”

“…Survival rates are excellent, but poor quality of life (QoL) outcomes have been reported in this group [2, 3]. Some researchers confirm that QoL in thyroid cancer is similar to that of other cancers with worse survival [4]. One study has shown that some people surviving DTC report fear of recurrences and/or long-term complications, restrictions in daily (social) life, working life, and sexual functioning resulting in deteriorated levels of QoL [5].…”

“…The clinical relevance of these small tumors is the subject of debate among experts in the field and has led to an overarching shift to less aggressive treatment and a primary focus on better risk-stratification [9,27,28]. Moreover, thyroid cancer patients are relatively young at diagnosis and frequently incur substantial associated health care costs as they undergo surveillance and treatment for recurrent disease over a lifetime, experiences that are a detriment to quality of life, and can cause financial hardship [2932]. Given the excellent survival outcomes and numbers of patients required to be informative, clinical trials are impractical.…”
