Quality of life in patients with benign anorectal disorders

Abstract: The GIQLI is a valuable instrument for measuring quality of life in patients with benign anorectal disorders. Although certain diseases do not seem to affect quality of life profoundly, certain subgroups of patients, most notably those with incontinence and severe constipation, are extremely compromised. Severely constipated individuals exhibit the same poor quality of life as patients with faecal incontinence.

“…There has been some previous research examining QOL in anal fistula; one study indicated that people with anal fistula did not have reduced QOL compared to agematched healthy individuals. 20 In this work, a variety of benign anorectal disorders, including anal fistula, were assessed using the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI). The GIQLI was developed from patients with pathologies higher in the gastrointestinal tract, such as peptic ulceration and biliary disease, and is thus not an accurate assessment for anal fistula.…”

“…Total GIQLI is calculated by adding the scores for each item (0-4 points), resulting in a maximum score of 144 (best quality of life). Mean GIQLI of anal carcinoma patients was compared to published results obtained in healthy volunteers or patients with benign anorectal diseases [5,13]. Ten patients underwent anorectal manometry under routine conditions, using a fluid-perfused system as described in detail elsewhere [7].…”

“…Comparison of Gastrointestinal Quality of Life (GIQLI) scores for colostomy-free survivors of anal canal carcinoma treated with intracavitary afterloading boost with values published for healthy volunteers and patients with benign anorectal diseases[13]. The maximum GIQLI score (optimum quality of life) is 144.…”

“…Short Form-36 (SF-36) is distinguished from other scales (Nottingham Health Profile) by being a selfassessment scale that is easily filled by the patient in a short time, evaluating the positive sides of the health status as well as the negative sides and detecting minor changes in disability (9).…”
