Quality of life in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: Results from the study of health in Pomerania

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea is known to be an overall public health problem that, among other things, increases morbidity and mortality. Risk factors as well as symptoms of this multidimensional sleep-related breathing disorder negatively affect quality of life. With our study we aimed to expose the association between obstructive sleep apnea and quality of life in the population of Pomerania, Germany. We utilized data from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Information on health status and r… Show more

“…The results of the current study showed an association between obstructive sleep apnea and HRQoL and almost all components of HRQoL, which are consistent with a previous study [ 34 37 ]. In US randomized controlled trial, continuous positive airway pressure, which was the treatment, for 483 patients with severe OSA and used ≥ 4 h per night, quality of life improved as measured by the Calgary Sleep Apnea Quality of Life Index [ 34 ].…”

“…Interactions with OSA might occur [ 38 ]. Often, poor sleep in post-menopausal women is associated with depression [ 33 , 39 ]. In a subsample of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, Young et al [ 40 ] found that sleep quality problems reported by post-menopausal women are not easily verifiable with a PSG.…”

“…Only females were included in the ordinal regression analysis. Descriptive data of the whole PSG sample and possible biases are readily available elsewhere [ 21 , 24 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Recurrent episodes of OSA may consequently lead to daytime sleepiness, fatigue, growth retardation, mood and behavioral disturbances, hyperactivity, learning and memory deficits, increased risk taking and injury risk, and poor neurocognitive performance. The impact of OSA on quality of life may have further long-term implications such as endocrine and cardiovascular disorders [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 ].…”
