Quality of life in myopia

Abstract: Background-The safety and predictability of refractive surgery for all degrees of myopia is now becoming established. It is therefore appropriate to evaluate whether there is a patient driven demand for such treatments and, if so, to establish guidelines for its provision within the National Health Service (NHS). Methods-A comparative study was designed to assess the eVect of degree of myopia on quality of life ("high" (n = 30) -10.00D, worse eye; "moderate" (n = 40) -4.00 to -9.75D, worse eye; "low" (n = 42) … Show more

“…In ophthalmology, self-reported questionnaires of visual quality and general functional status have been used widely and especially in the fields of cataract, 18,19 glaucoma, 20,21 macular disease, 22 myopia, 23 visual impairment, 4,5,24 and blurred vision. 25 Stereoacuity is considered to be an ability limited by age; 1,2 however, the impact of this finding on visual functioning and general well-being in the elderly has not been fully explored.…”

“…2 As ophthalmoplegia is one of the most common manifestations of mitochondrial cytopathies, any mitochondrial disease rating scale should include questions about visual function. 3 The Visual Function Index (VF-14) is a standardised vision-related quality-of-life instrument that has been validated in a wide range of ophthalmic conditions such as cataract surgery, 4 glaucoma, 5 age-related macular degeneration, 6 corneal transplantation, 7 retinal disease, 8 myopia, 9 and patients attending low-vision services. 10 Here, we report the first study to assess visual function in patients suffering from a mitochondrial disorder with ocular manifestations: CPEO.…”
