“…Despite the benefits of preventing bladder reflex activity and hardly any side effects in patients with complete spinal cord lesions, the patients are sometimes reluctant to undergo this necessary surgical procedure. Martens et al30 evaluated reasons for this, and patients reported the irreversible damage to the dorsal roots caused by the procedure as one of the main motives for not undergoing the procedure. After the rhizotomy, the designated anterior roots are organized and fixated in an electrode book that contains the electrodes to stimulate the different motor roots separately (Figure 3).…”

“…The Finetech–Brindley System can significantly improve the quality of life and independence of spinal cord patients 29,30. Getting control over the lower urinary tract with this device can reduce or abolish the need for bladder catherization and reduce the number of urine tract infections 29,30.…”

“…Additionally, Parastep ®, a commercially available device that relies on surface stimulation of the quadriceps, gluteal muscles, and peroneal nerves, permits individuals with lower SCI to ambulate for distances over a quarter of a mile 38 . Furthermore, Vocare ® utilizes anterior sacral root stimulation to restore micturition 39,40 .…”

“…Other researchers have made the decision to drop the SF-36 physical functioning scale because of supposed irrelevance, preferring to administer only seven of the eight subscales. [55][56][57] Herein lies a problem; it is not the mere fact that an outcome is generic that permits comparability across studies (and conditions); the outcome measure needs to be generic and valid. One-off modifications of standardized health surveys are inappropriate if undertaken without any assessment of measurement properties -an issue acknowledged by some authors who have used modified instruments.…”
