Quality of life in children and adolescents undergoing spinal deformity surgery

Abstract: All individual domains and total SRS-22 scores improved significantly with incremental change during post-operative follow-up. Patient satisfaction was very high for all individual diagnosis. 2-year post-operative outcomes compared favorably to reported SRS-22 scores in healthy adolescents.

“…The SRS-22r instrument has been used to measure QOL before and after treatment and this has been validated in patients with AIS [13]. The same questionnaire has been used to quantity patients' perception of clinical outcomes in other types of spinal deformity in the absence of disease-specific QOL outcome measures [14]. The SRS-22r comprises 22 questions, which are divided into 5 domains assessing function, pain, self-image, mental health and patient satisfaction.…”

“…Girls were nearly six times more likely to have a high symptom profile. Gender disparities were also observed by McKean and Tsirikos, 90 who found males fared better in pain and function 2 years after surgery. Anxiety and pain catastrophizing behavior between parent and child can parallel each other too, although this relationship was weak.…”

“…The SRS-22 is responsive to changes in both pediatric and adult scoliosis patients, and is also being used to compare the effects of treatment on patients of different ages. [ 33 34 77 78 ] Durand et al . examined the relationship between age, lumbar stiffness after fusion surgery and SRS-22 satisfaction score among patients who underwent deformity surgery and he found that the patient satisfaction and SRS-22 score were markedly more associated with lumbar stiffness among younger (<60-years-old) versus older patients (> 60-years-old).…”
