The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic syndrome (MS) criteria and also to investigate the effects of MS on medical treatment, clinical course and personal and social performance in patients with schizophrenia. One hundred-sixteen patients with schizophrenia were included in the study. Measurements of MS were calculated in all patients. Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP) were applied. The frequency of MS according to IDF criteria was 42.2 % among the patients. There was no significant difference between patients with and without MS in terms of age. The ratios of MS were 62.5 % for the group taking typical and atypical antipsychotics together and 35.7 % for the group taking two or more atypical antipsychotics together. The duration of disorder in patients with MS was higher than those without MS. Furthermore there was no significant difference between the schizophrenic patients with and without MS, in terms of PSP scores. Our findings showed that the duration of illness, high scores of BMI, use of clozapine or concurrent use of typical and atypical antipsychotics, depressive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia were significant risk factors for the development of MS.

The major purposes of this study were to examine levels and correlations of quality of life (QOL), social support, and severity of psychiatric symptoms as well as to identify the variables that best predict QOL among Jordanian patients with schizophrenia. Descriptive cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 160 patients selected through systematic random sampling from two psychiatric outpatient clinics. Results showed that the highest domain of QOL was the social relationship domain, and the highest source of social support was perceived from significant others. Severity of affective symptoms was the highest, and severity of positive symptoms was the lowest. QOL correlated positively with social support, patients' educational and income level, and employment; and negatively with severity of psychiatric symptoms, duration of untreated illness, and duration of treatment. Support from friends, duration of untreated illness, income level, and severity of affective symptoms predicted QOL and accounting for 47.3% of the variance.

RESUMO:A Esquizofrenia é considerada pela OMS como uma das dez doenças mais incapacitantes. Sendo uma perturbação complexa e de caráter crónico, gera prejuízos significativos na vida dos pacientes, prejudicando a sua qualidade de vida. O suporte social é um fator de redução do impacto de perturbações mentais, como a esquizofrenia. Tendo por base uma metanálise crítica reflexiva, com o objetivo compreender a relação entre os fatores que atuam numa melhor qualidade de vida e suporte social nos indivíduos com esta patologia, recorreu-se às bases de dados PubMed e Scopus, atendendo a critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Os resultados indicaram 10 artigos que investigaram as variáveis qualidade de vida e/ou suporte social em pacientes com esquizofrenia. Além disso, foram identificados o suporte social e o funcionamento social como preditores de uma melhor qualidade de vida. Contudo, foram reduzidos os estudos que relacionassem diretamente estas duas variáveis estudadas, assim como fatores que melhorassem a qualidade de vida e/ou suporte social. São sugeridas implicações para a promoção da qualidade de vida e suporte social destes doentes bem como a necessidade de mais investigação na área. Being a complex and chronic disorder, it generates a significant damage on patients' lives, impairing their quality of life. Social support is a factor that reduces the impact of mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Based on a reflective critical metaanalysis, in order to further understanding the factors that act in a better quality of life and social support for patients with this disease, we used the PubMed and Scopus databases, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results indicated 10 articles that have investigated the variables quality of life and / or social support in patients with schizophrenia. Moreover, we also identified, social support and social functioning as predictors of a better quality of life. However, few studies analyzed directly the relationship between these two variables, as well as factors that improve the quality of life and / or social support. Implications for the promotion of quality of life and social support of these patients are suggested, as well as the need for more research in the area.
