Quality of life by proxy and mortality in institutionalized older adults with dementia

Abstract: The present study suggests that the effect of QoL on mortality in institutionalized adults with dementia should take into account the presence or absence of depression. In addition, residents with a greater disability and more advanced dementia should be a target for interventions in rehabilitation care.

“…Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was the most included type of dementia, and it was the sole subtype evaluated in over a third of the studies ( n = 11) [ 20 , 25 , 27 , 28 , 32 , 39 , 43 47 ] ; four studies considered AD in combination with dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) [ 21 , 31 ], vascular dementia (VD) [ 34 ] or mixed [ 30 ]. Seven of the studies considered any type of dementia [ 19 , 24 , 33 , 35 , 37 , 38 , 40 ], and eight studies did not specify the type of dementia under investigation [ 22 , 23 , 26 , 29 , 36 , 41 , 42 , 48 ].…”

“…Using proxies to determine the HRQoL has been done before, e.g., relatives, friends, or professional caregivers were questioned if patients themselves were unable to answer the questionnaire due to illness or insufficient cognitive abilities (e.g., critically ill patients [ 55 ], patients with dementia [ 56 ], or young children [ 57 , 58 ]). While the agreement between patients and proxies was relatively good in some studies (e.g., [ 55 ]), there is evidence that proxies tend to report a lower quality of life than the patients themselves [ 59 , 60 ].…”
