“…In the present study, we show statistically and clinically significant improvements in these outcomes ( Figure 3C). The lack of a 'no-exercise' control group limited our ability to identify the normal trajectory in these measures, as a gradual improvement in HRQL and fatigue would be expected in the months after HNC treatment [53]. However, participants in the present study returned to baseline values by the end of the intervention.…”

“…However, participants in the present study returned to baseline values by the end of the intervention. Previous research has shown that, although there is an improvement over time, scores do not return to baseline values until 12-months after cancer treatment [53]. Therefore, it is reasonable to suggest that the strength training interventions accelerated the natural time-course in these measures, considering that exercise is beneficial for cancer-related fatigue [54] and in studies with a no-exercise control, the improvement in HRQL is greater in the group receiving the intervention [10,34].…”

“…3 Although the long-term FACT-H&N total scores are higher than reported in either the CCTG HN.6 study or the TROG02.02 study, the baseline evaluations were lower in both of those studies, and all studies showed the typical recovery back to their reported pretreatment scores. 41,42 The HADS anxiety and depression subscales also showed excellent results beyond the acute treatment period, with few patients meeting the screening threshold for emotional distress. Beyond the patientreported measures, the outcomes from the PSS-HN similarly showed excellent long-term outcomes.…”
