“…The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis displayed that the influence factors of male sleep quality consisted of smoking and health status, the worse health status they got and the more cigarette they smoked, the worse sleep quality they suffered. Similarly, the study of Nasri et al (2021) found that both active smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke would have a negative impact on sleep quality. This phenomenon might attribute to the fact that the direct effect of nicotine on sleep-wake cycle neurons can cause sleep disturbance in smokers, showed by prolonged sleep onset latency, higher dopamine levels and lower dopamine transporter levels in cerebrospinal fluid of active smokers ( Li et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Sleep quality is a comprehensive sleep assessment indicator that includes sleep duration and other sleep manifestations. Although most studies focus on the sleep quality of healthy individuals 13,25,26 , there is still insufficient research on the relationship between SHS exposure and sleep quality in patients with chronic diseases. In this context, we observed that hypertensive males exposed to SHS had good sleep quality, which individual differences, lifestyle, and psychological factors may influence.…”

“…It is widely recognized that tobacco smoke coexists with the human environment and has a broader impact by contributing to the burden of disease, especially ischemic heart disease 11 . A series of studies have also explored the potential risk factors of sleep quality issues caused by SHS [12][13][14] , where passive smoking triggers sleep deprivation and sleep disorders. To date, the negative effects of hypertension or SHS exposure on sleep have been well established.…”

“…For example, e-cigarette users have lower odds to present inadequate sleep duration compared to cigarette users, while dual user present the highest odds [39], and the same goes for heavy smokers compared to regular smokers [40], or those who consume tobacco with higher nicotine concentration [41]. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence that those who are exposed to second-hand smoke are also more prone to develop sleep disturbances, such as short, insufficient or poor-quality sleep, than those who are not [42][43][44][45]. Another factor that possibly intervenes in the relationship between smoking and sleep disturbances is stress [46], something that was even more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic [47].…”
