Quality of life and exercise performance in unoperated children with anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery from the opposite sinus of valsalva

Abstract: Patients with unoperated anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery appear to have normal quality of life, but parents of exercise-restricted patients have decreased general health and emotional and physical quality of life scores. Improved counselling of families may be beneficial in this group. Future studies with more patients should evaluate quality of life and exercise performance over time.

“…On the other hand, medical patients have a restricted lifestyle, which may impact their own and families QoL, as reported by Sing et al [28], who demonstrated that patients' families were often experiencing a decreased level of general health and emotional and physical QoL scores. To minimize this, exercise restriction should be better defined and families should be better counselled, to understand that their children can participate in most activities.…”

“…4 We currently lack prospective longitudinal data providing evidence as to the best management strategy for these patients and if intervention alters the risk of suffering SCD. Previous studies on QOL assessment of these patients utilized generic PedsQL questionnaires and thus reported normal QOL score in unoperated 5 and operated AAOCA patients. 6 This is the first study to assess QOL and family impact, using cardiac specific (PCQLI) and PedsQL Family Impact Module following a diagnosis of AAOCA.…”

“…A panel discussion with families affected by AAOCA during these meetings brought special attention to the psychosocial needs of patients as well as their parents and siblings. As in any other field of medicine, quality of life measurement should be standard of care for these patients and families . Improved counseling and measurement of exercise performance over time will help to improve the care and well‐being of these patients.…”
