Quality of life among Egyptian women with breast cancer after sparing mastectomy and immediate autologous breast reconstruction: a comparative study

Abstract: Breast reconstruction is considered as an integrated part of the modern breast surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether immediate autologous breast reconstruction influences QOL and patient satisfaction outcomes among Egyptian women with breast cancer in comparison to the traditional mastectomy. This is a prospective study in which 200 Egyptian women with non metastatic breast cancer were included; group I (100 patients) underwent sparing mastectomy with immediate autologous breast reconstruction … Show more

“…Several types of cancer and cancer treatments may cause body image changes. The majority of studies assessing body image changes in cancer patients have focused on breast cancer patients [3][4][5][6], but other types of cancer are likely to induce body image distress as well [1,[7][8][9]. Lacking a comprehensible and widely applicable Dutch test to assess body image changes in cancer patients, we validated Hopwood's Body Image Scale (BIS) [10] for the Dutch language.…”

“…However, this study also found that patients with BCT had a lower probability of metastasis from distant metastasis to death. Studies by Fisher S et al [29] have also showed that compared with patients receiving BCT, all-cause and breast cancer-speci c death risks of patients receiving MAST are signi cantly higher. This outcome may cause patients with BCT to metastasize for a longer time, which will bring more costs and increase the QALYs.…”

“…In addition, the Egypt National Cancer Institute (NCI) series 10,556 patients dur-ing the years of 2012 with an age adjusted rate of 49.6 per 1,000,000 population. [2,6] Many factors have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer demographics, personal history of benign or malignant breast diseases, family history, exposure to radiation and genetic predisposition and environmental factors such as high fat diet accompanied with sedentary life style constitute increased breast cancer risk. Thus, metabolic abnormalities including obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are positively associated with the breast cancer risk.…”
