Quality of life after traumatic brain injury: The clinical use of the QOLIBRI, a novel disease-specific instrument

Abstract: The QOLIBRI provides information about patient's subjective perception of his/her HRQoL which supplements clinical measures and measures of functional outcome. It can be applied across different populations and cultures. It allows the identification of personal needs, the prioritization of therapeutic goals and the evaluation of individual progress. It may also be useful in clinical trials and in longitudinal studies of TBI recovery.

“…There is a need for comprehensive disease-specific instruments for HRQoL assessment in persons after TBI, such as the novel disease-specific scale Quality of Life in Brain Injury (QOLIBRI; Truelle et al, 2010;von Steinbuechel et al, 2005von Steinbuechel et al, , 2010avon Steinbuechel et al, , 2010b. There is a need to develop a multidimensional approach to outcome assessment and classification, including the patient's quality of life.…”

“…However, generic measures may not capture the particular problems of TBI, and the need for condition-specific HRQL instruments in TBI is emphasized (13,21). Recently, the Quality of Life after Brain Injury (QOLIBRI), a condition-specific instrument for measuring HRQL after TBI, was developed in an international collaborative process (22)(23)(24). The QOLIBRI captures the individuals' well-being and satisfaction with their functioning and self, and provides a more precise measure of the individual's experience of living with a TBI than generic measures.…”

“…Part two focuses on impact, in regard to negative feelings and restrictions. The total score 0-100 acts as a HRQOL measurement for individuals following TBI, with higher scores indicating better HRQOL [39].…”
