BackgroundTraumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) affects quality of life (QoL) depending on the severity and access to rehabilitation. A good QoL is of paramount importance for TSCI survivors all over the world. ObjectiveTo assess the QoL of TSCI survivors after one year.MethodsAdults were included who by the time of injury were 18 years or above and registered in a previous epidemiological study. “The International Spinal Cord Injury Quality of Life” standard data set was used to collect data and assess overall QoL (range 0-30) and three domains: satisfaction with life as a whole, physical- and psychological health (range 0-10). A telephone interview was conducted with 58 participants. ResultsThe overall mean score of QoL was 13.12 (SD 7.17), satisfaction with life as a whole 3.91 (SD 2.73), psychological health 5.36 (SD 2.95), and physical health 3.84 (SD 2.59). Marital status significantly influenced overall QoL (P = 0.031) and its two domains; satisfaction with life as a whole (P = 0.037) and satisfaction with physical health (P = 0.022). Linear regression analysis showed that being married or widowed predicted poor QoL.ConclusionLow scores of overall QoL and its domains implying poor QoL and marital status may play a role, hence it is important to take it into consideration when treating patient with TSCI. Background: Community reintegration is a major outcome of rehabilitation after the acute phase in people with spinal cord injury (PWSCI).Objective: To investigated clinical and socio-demographic factors determining community participation in PWSCI, living in the greater eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal province.Method: Our quantitative, cross-sectional study had a convenient sample of 41 PWSCI. A trained interviewer obtained socio-demographic information using a structured questionnaire. Participants completed the Reintegration to Normal Living Index (RNLI). Descriptive statistics were used in summarising the data; inferential statistics, -a t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) assessed the association of clinical and socio-demographic factors with the extent of community reintegration. A multiple linear regression investigated the determinants of community reintegration with the alpha level set at p = 0.05.Results: Mean age of the participants was 41 years (s.d.: 10, range 25–66), with the majority (n = 32, 78%) being male. The mean RNLI score was 68% (s.d.: 22, range 24–100). Participants scored higher on the RNLI if they were male (mean difference [MD] 18%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2–34), were employed (MD 16%, 95% CI: 0–32), had a salary (MD 19%, 95% CI: 5–32) and had no muscle spasms (MD 14%, 95% CI: 1–27. Muscle spasms (p = 0.012, 95% CI: 3.85–29.05) and being female PWSCI (p = 0.010, 95% CI: −35.75 to −5.18) were significant negative predictors of community reintegration.Conclusion: Community reintegration may be influenced by socio-economic factors. Special interventions for muscle spasms and support for women living with spinal cord injuries may enhance community reintegration.Clinical implication: Therapists need to focus on community reintegration with female PWSCI and on returning to PWSCI to work as this was improved community reintegration.

Study design We conducted a mixed-methods sequential explanatory study. In India, most spinal cord injuries (SCI) occur within low socioeconomic status populations, typically resulting in poor vocational outcomes post-injury and difficulty reintegrating into the community. This study will increase our understanding of how vocational rehabilitation affects patients with SCI. Objectives This study aims to understand the factors affecting vocational outcomes, quality of life and social inclusion for patients who have completed the Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA’s) rehabilitation program, by examining both quantitative and qualitative measures. Methods Conducted at the University of Toronto, we used self-administered questionnaires via REDCap for quantitative data collection and semi-structured interviews for qualitative data collection to capture aspects of lived SCI experience for five participants. Results Thirty-two participants completed the quantitative phone questionnaire of which 17 were paraplegic and 15 were quadriplegic. Four themes emerged including physical barriers to employment, social inclusion of SCI patients, low income, and state of mental health. Conclusion This study provided a detailed examination of demographic information and lived experiences of ASSA participants. The findings will be relevant and applicable to both clinical and public health sectors in SCI rehabilitation in India and other low- and middle-income countries by directing rehabilitation programs to better address areas of function that allow patients to find success following rehabilitation.
