Quality of life after surgery for intracranial meningioma

Abstract: BACKGROUND To the authors' knowledge, limited data exist regarding long‐term quality of life (QOL) for patients diagnosed with intracranial meningioma. METHODS The data in the current study concerned 1722 meningioma cases diagnosed among residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, Texas, and North Carolina from May 1, 2006 through March 14, 2013, and 1622 controls who were frequency matched to the cases by age, sex, and geography. These individuals were participants in a large, population‐based, case‐… Show more

“…In our study, the values of the physical health component of SF-36 were comparable to the values reported in meningioma patients before and after surgical treatment [13]. After meningioma surgery, patients generally report lower HRQoL compared to healthy controls [8,18], although some data on patients who underwent surgery for asymptomatic meningiomas demonstrated no significant difference compared to the general population [19,20]. On the other hand, data on patients under wait-and-watch are lacking.…”

“…However, their study was limited by the short interval between surgery and survey completion (median time 0.59 years), thereby limiting their assessment of long-term QoL, and as above, did not address pretreatment patient concerns. 19 Our group conducted a prospective cross-sectional study on health related QoL in 291 postoperative meningioma patients in 2019 and found that a number of postoperative meningioma patients continued to experience fatigue, sleep impairment, emotional, and social functional impairment as far out as 120 months after treatment. 20 Here, we present the results of a large, internationally administered survey that illustrates the patients’ experience and symptomology through various stages of the disease from the diagnosis to years after treatment, in the hopes of identifying opportunities to address unmet needs.…”

“…Two large studies of 1722 and 291 patients showed significant reductions in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social function, and patients suffered significant fatigue and sleep impairment following meningioma surgery. 17,18 Cranial meningiomas can be broadly divided into skull base tumours and non-skull base. The Surgical morbidity and mortality described, might at first be thought to be related to a preponderance of skull base tumours.…”
