Quality of life after mastectomy and its relation with muscle strength of upper limb

Abstract: | This research transversal, analytical, exploratory and quantitative approach aimed to identify the quality of life of women who have had a mastectomy surgery, relate the results with the strength of the upper limb muscle affected and draw a sociofunctional profile. A total of 10 women participated, from 30 to 60 years old, who underwent to unilateral modified radical mastectomy in a medium-sized hospital in an inner city of Rio Grande do Sul, for at least one year from the date of data collection. “…In another study the impact of breast cancer and mastectomy on the QoL of mastectomized women was especially seen on the social aspects of their lives and the quality of life was affected negatively in patients with mastectomy in terms of body image but the overall quality of life was not affected significantly. 5 It has also been reported that the mean score for the global health status for breast cancer patients was 64.92±11.42. The best functional outcomes were found for the cognitive and social functioning subscales and emotional functioning scored the lowest.…”

“…The average scores obtained for the EORTC C-30 questionnaire in both groups show that, within the total universe of the questionnaire's score, these values would be considered as low, and therefore would not represent more expressive complications 31,32 . This can be justified by the fact that the women in both groups had already completed the adjuvant treatment a few months prior and for that reason the symptoms presented would not be as evident.…”

“…It is necessary to introduce an early rehabilitation program because it is possible to obtain satisfactory results at the level of the increase in the amplitude of joint movement, the reduction in the volume of the edema of the limb on the same side of the mastectomy, and, consequently, the reduction of pain and functional incapacity (Táboas et al, 2013). There are three phases inherent in the rehabilitation nursing process: Preoperative phase whose objective is to know previous changes, check risk factors for the postoperative period, which contributes to the functional improvement of the limb on the same side of the mastectomy (Silva, Koetz, Sehnem, & Grave, 2014); Postoperative phase, in which in the immediate postoperative period involves a series of procedures such as positioning in bed on the opposite side of the mastectomy, relaxation and stretching exercises for pain and muscle contraction relief, and active assisted exercises of low amplitude (Camões et al, 2015); Chronic phase, which aims at the continuity of care to ensure the woman's quality of life, as regards the development of activities of daily living (ADL). The rehabilitation nursing intervention is reflected in the independence and autonomy of the person to take care of herself and also in gains in health for the women with mastectomies.…”
