“…For mucin 5A and extracellular matrix proteins, submucosal areas were measured with a calibrated image analysis system (Image Pro-Plus software, Media Cybernetics, Bethesda, Md) as previously reported. 18 The mean intraobserver variability (3 repeated cell counts) was between 4% and 8% for all studied antibodies. Mucin 5A was quantified by using Image Pro-plus software.…”

“…18 Our institution's tissue bank processed the biopsies by using the same standardized methodology: tissues were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraffin. Sections (5 mm) were cut by using a microtome (Surgipath Medical Industries, Richmond, Ill).…”

“…Our biopsies are probably taken deeper, leading to a greater amount of muscle collected in the control subjects than reported in other studies (alligator jaw forceps [FB-15C-1; Olympus, Centre Valley, PA] of volume 2.89 mm 3 were used). Our biopsies have been analyzed in a separate study for the SM area normalized to the total surface of the biopsy (62). No statistical differences were observed between subjects with mild to moderate asthma and control subjects.…”
