Model mental transition-attempting: The case of beginners students in understanding the concept of integers

A mental model is a concept that exists in students' minds and is used to describe and explain a phenomenon. This study aims to describe the transition-attempting mental model of students in understanding the concept of integers. This study uses a qualitative approach and the type of research conducted is descriptive. The subjects of this study amounted to 58 students in class VII. Subjects were given a test to determine their understanding of the concept of integers. They were collecting data in this study using test questions and interviews. Data analysis used five steps, namely 1) data transcoding; 2) reviewing data; 3) data reduction; 4) presenting data; 5) analyzing the process of forming mental models; and 6) verifying the findings. This study indicates that students can compare negative integers and positive integers for symbols of different quantities. However, this finding cannot be categorized into the level of the mental model that already exists, so in this study, we solve the mental transition I model into a transition-attempting mental model. Based on the research results found, the mental transitionattempting model can be seen from the information held by students and stored in long-term memory before they are faced with certain concepts.

Local history has its point in providing information to local communities for the exemplary process. However, there are not many studies of local history to be implemented in history learning. Thus, the purpose of this study was to find the values of character education in the material for the struggle of K.H. Ahmad Hanafiah in defending Indonesian independence in the Lampung Residency and its implementation in learning local history. The method used is a qualitative research method with historical studies. This study uses primary and secondary sources and uses interviews as reinforcement. The results of the study are: (1) K.H. Ahmad Hanafiah as a local figure who fought to defend Indonesia's independence in Lampung Residency, (2) The values of character education contained in the material include: religious attitude, hard work, curiosity, love for the homeland, national spirit, and independence, (3) These character values can be implemented in local history learning through the Class XI lesson plans covering the stages of planning, implementation, and evaluation in high school. It is hoped that students can imitate the figure of a K.H. Ahmad Hanafiah, especially for those who live in the Lampung area, and apply it in their lives both now and in the future. History learning has a central role in instilling the values of national character because the scope of the material taught contains heroic, exemplary, patriotism, and nationalism values.

The issue of nationalism which is starting to fade among the younger generation is caused by the negative impact of globalization. Learning history is one of the solutions to revitalize the values of nationalism. This study aims to analyze the process of instilling nationalist values in history learning, the obstacles encountered when instilling nationalist values in history learning, and the efforts made in overcoming the obstacles faced by teachers when instilling nationalist values in history learning. Qualitative type research with case studies. The research subjects were madrasa heads, history teachers, and students of class XI IPS. Data collection techniques: observation, interviews, documentation. Data analysis techniques use the Miles & Huberman model. The results of the study show that the process of instilling nationalist values in history learning is through planning, implementing, and evaluating. The obstacles experienced were students' different backgrounds, difficulties in controlling internet use, mass media reporting, and the absence of a history laboratory. Efforts made by the teacher, namely making himself a role model and motivator, holding an agenda for mandatory visits to historical sites, participating in every national holiday commemoration event. The conclusion of instilling the values of nationalism in history learning can be seen from the cognitive, affective, psychomotor aspects of students.
