Quality-Driven Dynamic VVC Frame Partitioning for Efficient Parallel Processing

Abstract: VVC is the next generation video coding standard, offering coding capability beyond HEVC standard. The high computational complexity of the latest video coding standards requires high-level parallelism techniques, in order to achieve real-time and low latency encoding and decoding. HEVC and VVC include tile grid partitioning that allows to process simultaneously rectangular regions of a frame with independent threads. The tile grid may be further partitioned into a horizontal sub-grid of Rectangular Slices (RS… Show more

“…In comparison to the proposal presented in [5], the significance of effective information and reference management among parallel-processed coding segments becomes evident. Although employing 4 threads yields a Coding Gain similar to that achieved by the approach presented in this document, it results in a substantial compression penalty.…”

“…In [5], a frame partitioning algorithm for parallel processing is presented using the tile grid partitioning of VVC. Thus, the algorithm proposes a Tile and Rectangular Slice (TRS) partitioning solution that considers both spatial texture of the content and encoding times of previously encoded frames to search for the best partitioning configuration that minimizes the trade-off between multi-thread encoding time and encoding quality loss.…”

“…In this case, at a certain processing time, some threads are free, without a task, waiting to finish processing the current frame. For more details about this issue, a quality-driven dynamic frame partitioning for efficient parallel processing is explained by Amestoy et al in [6]. A dynamic tile and rectangular slice partitioning solution enables the best partitioning configuration that minimizes the trade-off between multi-thread encoding time and quality loss.…”
