Quality Control and Quality Assurance of Asphalt Mixtures Using Laboratory Rutting and Cracking Tests

Abstract: The main objectives of this project were to review the available balanced-mix design (BMD) methodologies, understand the I-FIT and Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test (HWTT) test methods using INDOT asphalt mixtures, and to explore the application of these tests to both a BMD approach and as performance-related Quality Control (QC) and Quality Acceptance (QA) methods. Two QA mixture specimen types, plant-mixed laboratory-compacted (PMLC) and plant-mixed field-compacted (PMFC) were used in the determination of cracking… Show more

“…Cylindrical samples are usually preferred because of the ease of sample preparation compared to beam samples. The samples were kept in a chamber at 50 • C for 4 h. Then, two cylindrical samples were fixed in plastic molds and subjected to a rut wheel with a diameter of 203 mm and a width of 47 mm [73]. After 10,000 loading cycles under a force of 705 ± 4 N and a passing speed of 0.305 m/s, the rutting depth was measured [31].…”
