In this study, the biological activity of selected Greek medicinal and aromatic plants on the phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria alternata was investigated. Biological activity was screened on crude aqueous extracts and their aqueous phase (ap-pt) after further extraction with petroleum ether. All the Lamiaceae species examined were found to enhance significantly the mycelium growth. Melissa officinalis extracts caused the highest stimulation in mycelium growth, (+109.1%) the ap-pt, and (+51.6%) its crude extract. All ap-pt extracts stimulated conidia production, but Melissa officinalis caused the highest effect (+349.3%). Crude extracts of Salvia officinalis stimulated highly conidial production (+65%) whereas Hyssopus. officinalis and Origanum vulgare inhibited conidia production at 33.3% and 50.0% respectively. The differences in biological activity between crude and ap-pt extracts for each plant species were attributed through the calculation of correspondent synergism ratios (SR) to the interaction between volatile and water -soluble. Rosmarinic acid, detected as the most abundant phenolic compound in all extracts analyzed and found to correlate strongly (R= 0.84) with the stimulation effect on spore production of A. alternata.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to show relationships among the levels of essential metals (zinc, iron, sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium) and phenolic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic, gallic, rosmarinic and syringic) in commercial herbs (lemon balm, thyme, rosemary, mint, sage and angelica) and spices (caraway, lovage, hyssop and oregano). In the herbs higher quantities of metals and phenolic compounds were found than in spices. All plants contained high levels of calcium, potassium and rosmarinic acid, but low levels of zinc and gallic acid. By using principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses several clusters were identified grouping samples originating from a plant of a particular botanical species. Multivariate analysis has also shown that the contents of phenolic acids had a stronger impact on the scattering of herbs and spices than the metals levels. Furthermore, statistically significant correlations were found between calcium and ferulic, gallic, rosmarinic and syringic acids as well as between zinc and sodium and caffeic acid. This suggests co-operate between these biologically active constituents in metabolic processes occurring in plants.

Release of rosmarinic acid from semisolid formulations and its penetration through human skin ex vivo

The aim of this study was to evaluate the release of rosmarinic acid (RA) from the experimental topical formulations with the Melissa officinalis L. extract and to evaluate its penetration through undamaged human skin ex vivo. The results of the in vitro release study showed that higher amounts of RA were released from the emulsion vehicle when lemon balm extract was added in its dry form. An inverse correlation was detected between the released amount of RA and the consistency index of the formulation. Different penetration of RA into the skin may be influenced by the characteristics of the vehicle as well as by the form of the extract. The results of penetration assessment showed that the intensity of RA penetration was influenced by its lipophilic properties: RA was accumulating in the epidermis, while the dermis served as a barrier, impeding its deeper penetration.
