Quality attributes of table olives as affected by regulated deficit irrigation

Abstract: preprint© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) allows us to decrease the amount of water to apply without significantly affecting yield and fruit quality. The influence of 3 irrigation treatments [T0: control (no stress); T1: moderate stress during pit hardening; and, T2: low stress at the end of flowering stage and moderate during pit hardening) on the quality of table olives, cv. '. Manzanilla', was evaluated. The parameters evaluated in table olives (after processing) were: weight, size, te… Show more

“…Interestingly, drupes of trial T50 showed values of carpological measurements similar to that registered for trial T100. Cano-Lamadrid et al (2015) also observed the highest equatorial diameter in fruits submitted to irrigation during stone hardening. Similar results were reported by Proietti and Antognozzi (1996) and Aponte et al (2012) for olives harvested from irrigated trees.…”

“…Cano-Lamadrid et al (2015) also observed positive effects on the quality and consumers' satisfaction degree of table olives from moderate irrigation. In contrast, Aponte et al (2012) did not show significant differences among samples coming from irrigated and not irrigated groves, a result imputable to the action of the LAB strains added as starter culture.…”

“…Basically, 0.5 g were digested using HNO 3 at temperature below 140 C. Quantification was conducted in a Unicam Solaar 969 atomic absorption-emission spectrometer (Unicam Ltd., Cambridge, U.K.). A certified reference material (GBW07603) was used to ensure the goodness of the analytical protocol (Cano-Lamadrid et al, 2015). Analyses were run in triplicate.…”

“…Table olives cultivated under RDI conditions are considered as ‘hydrosustainable’ products, and have a solid identity (higher contents of essential components, higher intensity of key sensory attributes, etc. ); besides, they can be a good alternative for this type of crop and reduce the economic and environmental costs linked to irrigation, optimising the use of a very valuable resource in the world, water …”
