Quality assessment chicks from different hatcher temperatures with different scoring methods and prediction of broiler growth performance

Abstract: The aim of the current study was to determine the quality of chicks from different hatcher temperatures for the prediction of broiler growth performance. The hatcher temperatures were applied as follows: control (36.8-37.0°C), acute high hatcher temperature (38.8-39.0°C for 3 hours daily, 36.8-37.0°C in remaining time) and chronic high hatcher temperature (38.8-39.0°C). The chick quality was measured with Tona score, Pasgar score, chick-hatching weight, yolkfree chick weight and chick length. Whereas the chick… Show more

“…The yolk sac is infected by bacteria, especially E. coli at the time of egg collection for incubation and at hatching or right after hatching before the navel heals [29]. A higher antibody titer in hens indicates higher quantities of antibodies transferred to chicks and concurrently providing a long-lasting passive immunity [30]. This may be the reason for the high WBC count and monocyte percentage in the FBDOC observed in the current study.…”

“…Quality of day old chick is a very essential factor for profitability of poultry producers. In hatcheries, the chick quality is determined by quantitative and qualitative scoring, considering various numerical or observation quality criteria (Sozcu and Ipek ,2015). For poultry producers it is difficult to get day-old-chicks of good quality from local hatcheries.…”

“…Even slight imbalances in chick quality can substantially impact the performance and profitability of the broiler farms. Various methods and parameters are considered in the DOC quality assessment, including the visual evaluation of physical traits, and measuring the level and uniformity of maternal antibodies against specific infectious agents that are relevant in the local contexts [ 1 , 2 ].…”
