Quality and impact of secondary information in promoting evidence-based clinical practice: a cross-sectional study about EBMH

Abstract: The commentators and original study authors view EBMH not as a vehicle for criticism, but instead as a trustworthy publication that crystallises important findings and presents them in digestible form with the aim of promoting key advances in mental health. Next, we aim to assess the extent to which the readership of this journal agrees.

“…In this regard, none of the available papers included a control group which is necessary to increase the robustness of these types of studies. This observation makes us question researchers' ability or possibility to apply evidence in practice [45]. Two different speculative reasons could be difficulty activating broad protocols that require two different study samples or a general difficulty detecting all the information on best evidence that the literature can provide.…”

“…In the same way, date filters can be used to update a literature search since the last time it was conducted. Reviewing the literature should be a timely process (new and potentially relevant evidence is produced constantly) and updating the search is an important step, especially if collecting evidence to inform clinical decision-making, as publications in the field of medicine are increasing at an impressive rate (Barber 2016). The filters chosen will depend on the research question and nature of evidence that is sought through the literature search and the guidelines of the individual database that is used.…”

“…Most mental health professionals simply do not have sufficient time to read important primary research reports. A number of ‘secondary journals' exist that aim to overcome this issue by summarising the most important and up-to-date research, potential clinical implications of research and methodological advances 5. Previous evidence suggests that evidence-based summaries are more likely to improve access to necessary information required by clinicians, can improve clinical knowledge and reduces errors in decision-making 6 7…”
