Qualitative review of early experiences of off-site COVID-19 testing centers and associated considerations

Abstract: Given the predicted need for continued SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic testing, as well as the evolving availability and types of diagnostic tests, off-site COVID-19 testing centers (OSCTC) leaders need timely guidance to ensure they are meeting the needs of their unique populations. This research discusses the challenges and offers considerations for healthcare organizations and others when setting up and running OSCTCs. It also provides a springboard to engage policy makers and leaders in the healthcare community in a… Show more

“…Sometimes described as off-site COVID-19 testing centres (OSCTCs) 13 , drive-through testing centres were by far the most common testing modality evaluated (in 72% of articles), in Israel, Malaysia, Korea, Scotland and the USA. This testing modality enabled the use of a vehicle as a self-contained unit, which can reduce the spread of infection.…”

“…This study was designed to follow-up on important themes and ideations brought forth from the results of a Phase I OSCTCs study conducted in March through April 2020. 9 The Phase II interview guide, created by the research team's epidemiologist and a qualitative researcher, was informed by the Phase I work in an attempt to identify progress and best practices associated with OSCTCs from a broader United States population sample. Questions covered OSCTCs' COVID-19 sample collection protocols, populations tested, supporting partnerships, reimbursement processes, as well as general successes, challenges, and recommendations for other OSCTCs.…”

“…Additionally, OSCTCs have reported challenges around OSCTC leadership, access to personal protective equipment, weather, testing capacity, follow-up processes for results, and reimbursement for sample collection, as described in our earlier research. 9 As a result, many OSCTCs have been unable to incorporate strategies to serve vulnerable populations, who are disproportionally impacted by the disease. 10…”

“…TAT is time interval between the specimens received in the laboratory reception to the time of report dispatched with verification [11]. Qualitative study held by [12] suggest that RT-PCR test at Off-Site Covid-19 Testing Centres (OSCTC) need variability sample processing and TAT from days to weeks. Indeed, OSCTs needed to retest patients to support contact tracing if there is significance delay cases.…”
