Qualitative research in counseling psychology: A primer on research paradigms and philosophy of science.

Abstract: This article presents an overview of philosophy of science and research paradigms. The philosophy of science parameters of ontology, epistemology, axiology, rhetorical structure, and methodology are discussed across the research paradigms of positivism, postpositivism, constructivism-interpretivism, and the critical-ideological perspective. Counseling researchers are urged to locate their inquiry approaches within identifiable research paradigms, and examples of "locating" 2 popular inquiry approachesconsensua… Show more

“…Using the constructivist paradigm, through which the case study was approached in the current study, the participants were able to share and construct their stories while creating multiple realities. The subjective realities of participants were fore-grounded as the influence of context on the occupational engagement of the participants was considered 32 . Case study methodology is also known for considering the contextual conditions as well as clearly defining the boundaries between the context and the phenomenon 29,30,33 namely occupational engagement of mothers.…”

“…Consequently, the study was informed by the constructivist paradigm. This approach to producing scientific knowledge is based around a relativist ontology, under which multiple, subjective realities are acknowledged as constructed by individuals, all of which are equally valid (Ponterotto, 2005). Constructivist research uses an inductive logic to generate theory, and research is conducted in natural settings where the researcher and participant(s) co-create understandings (Jennings, 2010).…”

“…Thus, just like in post-positivism, the conclusions are all the more conditional and temporary (Tekin and Kotaman 2013). One of the strengths associated with static models is that, like post-positivism (Ponterotto 2005), researchers recognize that not all knowledge is gained from one single method. Instead, the modeler aims to implement several measurements in the investigation process and rejects the notion that they are able to capture objective reality seamlessly.…”
