Qualitative research as reflexive process: a word limitationchallenge in qualitative medical research publications?

Abstract: Background: There is a general consensus across health related disciplines that reporting of qualitative research should address criteria such as researcher reflexivity. Reflexive practice is thus understood as integral to producing rigorous and trustworthy research outcomes. Nevertheless, many journals in the health context impose a strict word limitation on original research articles, which may hinder reporting such aspects of the research in an adequate manner. Objective: To explore the presentation of refl… Show more

“…Indeed, we have concerns with some existing tools to reform science, because some may simply allow researchers the opportunity to falsely signal or perform ‘bias checking’ in a superficial way. In sum, embedding reflexivity into all research can not only improve the credibility and rigour of research (Del Busso & Leonardsen, 2019; Rosenberg & Tilley, 2021) but also fundamentally acknowledge that biases and subjectivities do , in fact, (still) exist.…”

“…Different researchers might access different, although equally valid, representations of the situations studied. Hence, a method of reflexivity was included to actively include the researchers’ impressions and preconsumptions [ 31 ]. As such, the researchers wrote down reflexivity notes, including thoughts and preconsumptions before and after each interview, as well as impressions about the context, nonverbal expressions and interaction between the researcher and the participant from the conversations.…”
