Qualitative phytochemical screening, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in methanolic extracts of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (Mace)

Abstract: Mace, also known as the flower of nutmeg, belongs to the family Myristicaceae. Traditionally, mace is known to be anti-fungal, antidepressant, aphrodisiac, digestive and carminative agent. The active components present in mace are responsible for its antioxidant properties. Qualitative phytochemical analysis showed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, carbohydrates as well as proteins and amino acids. The total phenolic content of methanolic extracts of mace was 238.52 (mg Gall… Show more

“…Moreover, C. cibarius produces a water-soluble polysaccharide that has potential immune-stimulating activity applications as a nutraceutical product [79]. C. cibarius also contains terpenoids with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties [80]. Furthermore, C. cibarius contains significant amounts of vitamins, particularly vitamin D, which plays a significant role in calcium absorption, bone health, and immune function [81].…”

“…A reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was adopted to analyze amino-acid content of fresh CCF. The sample was derivatized for volatility suitable for amino-acid analyzing using FMOC-Cl (9-fluorenylmethylchloroformate) as derivatization reagent and analyzed using Agilent 1260 Infinity HPLC System (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, California, USA) (Fabiani et al, 2002;Thakur and Sayeed, 2014). Detection was carried out using a Diode Array Detector (DAD, λmax ¼ 263nm).…”
