Qualitative longitudinal research in family sociology

Abstract: The combination of qualitative interpretative approaches and longitudinal research designs, although not new in the social sciences, is gaining increasing recognition as a useful and even necessary avenue to explore family changes as they occur. Qualitative methods, whether longitudinal or not, emphasise the understanding of meanings, subjective experience, and agency. The use of such methods can improve our comprehension of how people choose a given alternative and reject another, and how they adjust or fail … Show more

“…Our analysis initially aimed to identify trajectories of gatekeeping and their main drivers and encountered some of the challenges involved in conducting longitudinal qualitative analysis (Bernardi, 2021;Neale, 2021;Saldana, 2003). The process of analysis consisted of three main steps or components, drawing on previous research (Lewis, 2007;Thomson & Holland, 2003):…”

“…Our analysis initially aimed to identify trajectories of gatekeeping and their main drivers and encountered some of the challenges involved in conducting longitudinal qualitative analysis (Bernardi, 2021; Neale, 2021; Saldana, 2003). The process of analysis consisted of three main steps or components, drawing on previous research (Lewis, 2007; Thomson & Holland, 2003): (1) A cross‐sectional analysis of each case, based on an initial coding of the data by means of NVivo; (2) a longitudinal examination of each case, based on the construction of synthetic matrixes or case profiles and summary case narratives; and (3) a comparison of cases and groups of cases based on the prior two steps.…”

“…In response to such tensions, longitudinal narrative researchers are faced with the challenge of interpreting multiple interviews through iterative or summative processes. While the concept of change over time is central in both methods of analysis, iterative approaches emphasize points in time, whereas summative approaches observe the cumulative narrative (Bernardi, 2021). Iterative approaches may better address the layers of narrative at each time point.…”

“…Due to the need to manage time in the research process, researchers negotiate opportunity-cost and make choices to adhere to methodologies and practices that do not entirely encompass the potential of their data. Bernardi (2021) addresses these challenges by encouraging researchers to “scale-up” by bringing together smaller studies and incorporating smaller projects into existing larger data sets. This can enable access to rich data sets, while enhancing the cross-context applicability of qualitative longitudinal research.…”

“…What is interesting about this debate is that it shifts attention away from developing sophisticated econometric techniques for studying the causal effect of employment on fertility, and instead focuses on fi nding appropriate item sets to measure future "models" or "narratives" of the world. It has also been proposed that more qualitative research should be conducted, including longitudinal qualitative research that helps to elucidate how these "narratives" are formed and altered across time (Bernardi 2021;Vignoli et al 2020b).…”
