Qualitative evaluation of Pb and Cu in fish using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with multipulse excitation by ultracompact laser source

Abstract: We show a new laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) setup based on a small, ultracompact, and low-cost excitation source developed by the authors. The laser is a compact Nd:YAG laser emitting in the multipulse Q-switch regime and is capable of delivering a bunch of pulses with a total energy up to 300 mJ. The developed system is applied to the analysis of Pb and Cu contaminants on fish. LIBS spectra were obtained from scales, muscle, and skin of fresh and frozen samples. The developed excitation source i… Show more

“…Along with its advantages of fast analysis speed, multiple elemental measurements, and the capability of remote sensing, LIBS may meet the demand of real-time measurement in agriculture [ 11 ]. Some preliminary studies concerning the quantitative analysis of Cu in the field of food detection has been published, including food supplements [ 12 ], nutrient elements [ 13 ], and analysis of contaminants [ 14 ].…”

“…Also, the complexity of the measuring process is considerably reduced [8]. Recently, several reports of LIBS applied to determination of heavy metals, such as Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cr, in food products, vegetables, and fruits were published [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…The configuration we used has been published elsewhere, 15 and just a quick description is provided here. The ablation process was carried out by a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) Ara laser (Bralax Laser Labs), capable of delivering pulses of 40 mJ at 10 ns pulse width with a repetition rate of 2 Hz.…”
