Qualitative characteristics of water resulting from the introduction of Eucalyptus silviculture in Pampa biome, RS

Abstract: This study aimed to present the effect on surface water quality of the introduction of eucalyptus forestry in areas that were traditionally used for extensive cattle farming in the Pampa biome, by comparing two paired watersheds located in the municipality of Rosário do Sul, one of them used for forestry and the other in an anthropized natural grassland condition in the Pampa biome. Water quality and land use parameters averages were compared using the t-Test to account for the land use and seasonality. It was… Show more

“…It is important to emphasize that the native grassland area of this study has an adequate livestock management controlled by the Federal University of Santa Maria. Studies conducted in field areas with high exploitation management have obtained greater differences in water balance results when compared with forested areas [54].…”

“…The PTN biome is a sedimentary basin dominated by a combination of mesic and xeric vegetation growing side by side due to seasonal flooding [52]. The PMP biome consists of large areas of natural grasslands with a floristic matrix composed of forest formations interspersed along the watercourses [53]. Table 1 summarizes other characteristics of the Brazilian biomes, whereas the rainfall regime for each is shown in Figure 2.…”

“…The ALK showed the highest values in this season, focusing on points 1 and 2. It had a tendency towards a positive correlation with TDS, TSS, TP, Cl -, Ca and Mg (Table 10) due to increased precipitation and ion availability originating from the dissolution of rock and soils (Lima and Zakia, 2006;Cruz et al, 2016).…”
