Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of Nerium oleander L. extracts associated with toxicity profile

Abstract: In this study, phytochemical analysis and toxicity profile of leaf and flower extracts of Nerium oleander L. species collected from Giresun province (Turkey) were investigated. In phytochemical analyzes, the cardiac glycoside, alkaloid, saponin and tannin contents of the extracts were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The physiological effects of extracts were determined by examining root elongation, weight gain and germination rates. Biochemical effects were determined by measuring the levels of malo… Show more

“…After centrifugation for 10 min at 10,000 rpm, the supernatant was evaporated with an evaporator (Heidolph, Hei-VAP ML). The residues obtained after the evaporation of the solvent were stored in glass bottles at + 4 °C 12 . Extract efficiency in extraction with each solvent was determined by using the following Eq.…”

“…Numerous studies on N. oleander's phytochemical composition and biological activity have been published in the literature. The antibacterial properties of N. oleander root bark tissue are caused by active ingredients like oleandrigenin and odoroside B [142,143]. In previous research, a hydroalcoholic extract from Nerium oleander leaves (containing 4.75 ± 0.32% of cardenolides) was prepared by using an ultrasound water bath apparatus, and fresh N. oleander leaves were extracted with ethanol: water (1:1) at 60 • C for one hour.…”
