Qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of nitrogen nutrition of tea plants under field condition using hyperspectral imaging coupled with chemometrics

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Rapid and accurate diagnosis of nitrogen (N) status in field crops is of great significance for site-specific N fertilizer management. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of hyperspectral imaging coupled with chemometrics for the qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of N status in tea plants under field conditions. RESULTS: Hyperspectral data from mature leaves of tea plants with different N application rates were preprocessed by standard normal variate (SNV). Partial least squares discrim… Show more

“…The experimental results show that the regression models with simple architecture are feasible, but are limited to the case without propeller and should be improved for big and nonlinear data. Wang et al used partial least squares regression and support vector machine (SVM) to assess the nitrogen status of tea plants [47]. Campos et al used a decision support system to generate the dosage of UAV spray in vineyards [48].…”

“…It provides many good algorithms to mine and retrieve more valuable chemical information from natural products (Kumar et al, 2014). Among the algorithms, random forest (RF) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) are commonly regarded as the effective tool in classification and accuracy prediction for multivariate data (Xia et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2019). Thus, the use of metabolomics in combination with chemometrics might exhibit the unique advantage for the analysis the discrimination between crude Eucommiae Cortex and its processed product.…”

“…The traditional analysis methods have been applied for detecting the taste‐related quality components of tea, mainly involving chromatography (Zhu et al ., 2019; Ren et al ., 2020b) and spectrophotometry (Dong et al ., 2020; Wang et al ., 2020). However, all of the above chemical analysis techniques are time‐consuming and costly.…”

“…HSI technique includes spectral information and image texture features of tea samples, and feature fusion of the above traits can comprehensively characterise the target properties. Nowadays, HSI technique has been successfully applied for monitoring and classification of tea quality (Li et al ., 2019; Wang et al ., 2019; Wang et al ., 2020), while few published papers involve the rapid discrimination of black tea quality categories employing HSI method and feature fusion.…”
