This study assessed the phytochemical contents of the aqueous, ethanol, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the fruit, leaves, root, and stem of F. thonningii at selected concentrations. The contents of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, volatile oils, phenols and flavonoids were determined qualitatively in these extracts at selected concentrations. The results obtained showed that alkaloids are present in the leaves, roots and stem barks of Ficus thonningii. The volatile oil is found in the stem bark, root bark, and fruit (aqueous only) of the plant. Saponin is found to be concentrated in all the extracts of the plant. Phenol is found to be concentrated in the fruit of the plant. Its presence is also confirmed in the leaves (at few concentrations) and present in trace amount in the stem bark. Tannin is found in the fruit, root bark and leaves of Ficus thonningii. Flavonoids are found in all the parts of Ficus thonningii. The variety of phytochemicals confirmed in the fruit, leaves, stem, and root barks of Ficus thonningii show that the plant is pharmacologically active.

This study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo free radical scavenging potentials of methanol extract of Ficus thonningii leaf and its liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LCMS) profiling. The qualitative phytochemical screening was carried out and the results show the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins glycoside and triterpenes. Antioxidant activities were carried out in vitro and in vivo and the reducing power shows a value of 0.53 ± 0.007 with a significant (p < 0.05) difference compared to the control and Diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) value of 59.0 ± 0.007 with a significantly different (p < 0.05) compared to the control. However, the two assays are concentration-dependent. The in vivo analysis shows that lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities have values of 24.03± 8.04, 1.60± 0.03 and 0.003± 0.001 respectively. All the values are significantly different when compared to the control and are concentration-dependent. The LCMS results revealed the presence of some important metabolites; phenolic glycosides and quassin, which are potential molecules against free radicals. Therefore, Ficus thonningii leaf contains vital antioxidants and could be used in health management to boost the immune system or in drug development.

Background: Green leafy vegetables provide many health and nutritional benefits to mankind. Processing to prolong the shelf-life of vegetables goes through several stages, though it might affect the nutrient composition. Objective: This study evaluated the effect of the processing method on the nutrient, anti-nutrient, and phytochemical composition of commonly consumed green leafy vegetables in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. Methodology: The study adopted an experimental design. Three hundred grams (300 g) of each of the leafy vegetables (Solanum aethiopicum and Colocasia esculenta) were cleaned, washed, and divided into three equal portions (100 g, each). One portion each was retained raw (served as a control); the others were processed by steaming and shade-drying methods and were later analyzed in the laboratory for nutritional, anti-nutrient, and phytochemical content using standard methods. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the data obtained. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Result: The steamed samples had higher moisture content than a shade-dried sample. Similarly, steamed Colocasia esculenta had the highest vitamin C among the processed leaf samples. Also, steamed Solanum aethiopicum had the highest value of vitamin E when compared to other processed samples. Shade-dried samples of Solanum aethiopicum had higher values of mineral content than its steamed counterpart while steamed Colocasia esculenta had higher potassium/magnesium content and lesser sodium/phosphorus than shade-dried Colocasia esculenta leaf. Steamed leaf samples had higher carotenoids and flavonoids with lesser alkaloid levels than shade-dried samples. Steamed Colocasia esculenta leaf had higher saponin and oxalate content than shade-dried Colocasia esculenta leaf, while shade-dried Solanum aethiopicum leaf had higher oxalate, phytate, and saponin level than the steamed Solanum aethiopicum. Conclusion: The study showed that leafy vegetables contain appreciable levels of nutrients and the different processing methods either increased or reduced the nutrient present in the leaves.
