Qualification tests of 474 photomultiplier tubes for the inner detector of the Double Chooz experiment

Abstract: The hemispherical 10" photomultiplier tube (PMT) R7081 from Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) is used in various experiments in particle and astroparticle physics. We describe the test and calibration of 474 PMTs for the reactor antineutrino experiment Double Chooz. The unique test setup at Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik Heidelberg (MPIK) allows one to calibrate 30 PMTs simultaneously and to characterize the single photoelectron response, transit time spread, linear behaviour and saturation effects, photon de… Show more

“…The boundaries of the NT, GC and Buffer are made of transparent acrylic vessels, while the Buffer volume is surrounded by a steel tank and optically separated from an outer layer described below. There are 390 low background 10-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) [10,11] positioned on the inner surface of the buffer tank. Orientation and positions of the PMT assemblies and dimensions of the tank walls were verified by photographic survey.…”

“…It shields from radioactivity of photomultipliers (PMTs) and of the surrounding rock, and is one of the major improvements over the CHOOZ experiment [4]. 390 10-inch PMTs [30][31][32] are installed on the stainless steel buffer tank inner wall to collect light from the inner volumes. These three volumes and the PMTs constitute the inner detector (ID).…”

“…Each of the 800 PMTs for both Double Chooz detectors was characterized thoroughly, and the measured characteristics are reported in [62][63][64][65][66]. The overall efficiency (quantum efficiency × collection efficiency) was found to be 23%.…”
