Quadrupole Interaction and High-Spin States in the Lead Region

Abstract: The energies of high-spin states formed by adding a few valence nucleons to 208 Pb can be accurately calculated by using empirical interaction matrix elements. It is shown that the energies of high-spin states with 207 Pb, 206 Pb, and 204 Pb as the core can also be accurately calculated if an additional quadrupole interaction with a strength proportional to the increased polarizability of the core is included. This interaction may contribute to the formation of yrast traps from states with a few valence nucleo… Show more

“…The second 8 + level at 2155.8+ekeV is likely to be due to the 7"cf7/2 i13/2 v(j-2)0+ configuration and should be subject to core polarization. Using the interaction constant Z=-0.7 MeV in the expression [10] E=zP2 (cos012 ) we find that the energy should be lowered by 80 keV, giving a level position in excellent agreement with the experimental value. Regarding the continuation of the yrast sequence above the 19 + level, we find from the calculation that the next two levels should be 20-and 21-of the 7~h9/2 i13/2 vi13~2 configuration.…”

“…States of this type were, in fact, predicted long ago [18]. For two protons outside a lead core an additional interaction has been observed, the so-called corepolarization [19], a long-range core-mediated quadrupole interaction. The coupling between particles i and j is expressed as Z ~ Pz(cosi~), where Z is the i<j core-dependent strength parameter.…”

“…The coupling between particles i and j is expressed as Z ~ Pz(cosi~), where Z is the i<j core-dependent strength parameter. From known states built on 2~176176 an empirical relation for the coupling strength as a function of mass number A is obtained [19]. A linear fit to these values yields z(A) = -59.557 + 0.281A (MeV).…”

“…Since for high spin states, isomers often corresponds to the aligned angular momenta of the valence nucleons [2], the possibility exists that the isomer corresponds to J=16 + of the Irch}/2 2 vg9/2) configuration. However no 7-ray with an energy equal to or greater than 100keV and having the required intensity was observed in the present work.…”
