QTLs involved in the restriction of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) long-distance movement in pepper

Abstract: Partial restriction of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) long-distance movement originating from the Capsicum annuum inbred line 'Vania' was assessed in a doubled-haploid progeny using two screening methods: the first allowed one to assess the resistance of adult plants decapitated above the fourth leaf and inoculated on the third leaf using a common CMV strain, and the second allowed one to assess CMV resistance to long-distance movement on seedlings inoculated using an atypical CMV strain. For both resistance test… Show more

“…In some cucurbits, resistance to CMV was controlled by one recessive gene (Kang et al, 2005), tomato and Arabidopsis have single dominant gene for resistance (Stamova and Chetelat, 2000;Takahashi et al, 2001Takahashi et al, , 2002. Several poly-genes for resistance were reported in Capsicum species including 'Perennial' (Caranta et al, 1997;Chaim et al, 2001;Grube et al, 2000;Lapidot et al, 1997), 'Vania' (Caranta et al, 2002), C. baccatum 'PI439381-1-3' (Suzuki et al, 2003) and C. frutescens 'BG2814-6' (Grube et al, 2000). In Arabidopsis and tomato, single dominant gene RCY and Cmr were suggested for resistance (Stamova and Chetelat, 2000;Takahashi et al, 2001Takahashi et al, , 2002.…”

“…For example, most disease resistance traits in plants, such as sheath blight resistance in rice (Zou et al, 2000), clubroot resistance in brassica napus (Manzanares-Dauleux et al, 2000) and cucumber mosaic virus resistance in pepper (Caranta et al, 2002), are all scored in several ordered categories, based on the magnitude of disease symptom. Similarly, there are many characters in animals and humans, such as scores for calving difficulty, expression of congenital malformations, numbers of reproductive events and so on, which are expressed as binary or ordinal traits.…”

“…In some accessions of the genus Capsicum and related wild species, different forms of CMV resistance: tolerance [ 2 ] and partial resistance [ 3 ], have been established. The tolerance is known based on reduced virus multiplication and/or restriction of CMV installation in host cells.…”

“…The tolerance is known based on reduced virus multiplication and/or restriction of CMV installation in host cells. Partial resistance to CMV is usually associated with some mechanism of reduction of the CMV long-distance movement [ 3,4 ].…”
