QTL mapping for benzoxazinoid content, preharvest sprouting, α-amylase activity, and leaf rust resistance in rye (Secale cereale L.)

Abstract: Mapping population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) representing 541 × Ot1-3 cross exhibited wide variations of benzoxazinoid (BX) content in leaves and roots, brown rust resistance, α-amylase activity in the grain, and resistance to preharvest sprouting. QTL mapping of major BX species using a DArT-based map revealed a complex genetic architecture underlying the production of these main secondary metabolites engaged in stress and allelopathy responses. The synthesis of BX in leaves and roots was found to be… Show more

“…ScGAMYB is located within a near-centromeric region on chromosome 3R where QTL for α-amylase activity were found in rye [17,19,21]. As expected, analysis performed here indicated significant relationship between ScGAMYB allelic segregation and α-amylase activity in grain.…”

“…Close linkage between these QTL and the dwarfing gene may result in association of grain parameters with plant height, which means that allele compositions in these loci in a short-straw donor line is crucial for the agronomic performance of developed progenies. The considered chromosome 3R region was shown to contain QTL controlling benzoxazinoid content and leaf rust resistance [ 26 ] which in turn raises the question about the response of Ddw4 to brassinosteroids and its association with disease resistance. Ddw4 may also be associated with preharvest sprouting resistance (PHS) and alpha-amylase activity in the grain (AA), as it is tightly linked with QTL for these traits [ 27 30 ] and with GA 3 oxidase [ 31 ], a candidate gene for PHS.…”

“…The current strategies to mitigate, and if possible eliminate LMA revolve around efforts to understand the genetic basis of LMA ( Mrva and Mares, 2001 ; Mohler et al, 2014 ; Mieog et al, 2017 ; Milczarski et al, 2017 ; Borner et al, 2018 ). These LMA strategies have been put in place despite a clear knowledge gap around the real impact of LMA on wheat flour end product quality.…”
