QTL for white spot syndrome virus resistance and the sex-determining locus in the Indian black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)

Abstract: BackgroundShrimp culture is a fast growing aquaculture sector, but in recent years there has been a shift away from tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon to other species. This is largely due to the susceptibility of P. monodon to white spot syndrome virus disease (Whispovirus sp.) which has impacted production around the world. As female penaeid shrimp grow more rapidly than males, mono-sex production would be advantageous, however little is known about genes controlling or markers associated with sex determination in… Show more

“…Recently the nematode fem-1 homologs have been isolated from insects Xiong et al, 2014) and shrimp (GenBank accession No: AHA90856). Moreover, in Penaeus monodon, an SNP marker occurring in a transcript of Fem-1 is significantly associated with sex (Robinson et al, 2014). All these lead to a new consideration: whether this sex determination mechanism of nematode is present in arthropod.…”

“…Recent genetic studies based on high-density linkage maps have provided new insights into sex determination systems and genome organization of sex chromosomes Palaiokostas et al, 2013;Robinson et al, 2014). In addition, transcriptomic data assist in identifying the genes of sex chromosome and sex differentiation pathways.…”

“…Identification of QTL based on the phenotypic and genotypic data using molecular markers provides a powerful method for MAS. The QTL are genomic regions associated with target traits, which can be significant for aquaculture, such as growth (Min et al ), environmental tolerance (Yáñez et al ), resistance to stress and diseases (Robinson et al ; Li et al ) and sex determination loci (Cui et al ). The SNPs from these regions are essential for NAS in aquaculture.…”
