QTL detection and MAS selection efficiency for lipid content in brown rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract: Rice lipid content as one of important ingredients of functional food and industrial products has become an entirely new target in the rice breeding programs worldwide. A genetic linkage map spanning 12 rice chromosomes with an average interval of 10.51 cM between markers was created using 172 DNA markers, which intended to elucidate genetic basis of lipid content in brown rice by QTL detection. Eight QTLs related to lipid content with LOD from 2.52 to 7.86 were mapped on chromosome1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 using… Show more

“…Among all the nutritional components in rice endosperm, crude fat content (CFC) is one major substance. CFC or lipids are mostly deposited in bran although their amounts are fewer than that of starch and protein in bran [2]. Fatty acid (FA) in brown rice is an important ingredient of functional foods and industrial products [3].…”

“…Rice lipid is mainly concentrated in the embryo, bran, and aleurone layer. Brown rice is rich in oleic acid, linoleic acid, and various trace components such as γ-oryzanol, sterols, tocopherol, and tocotorienol [2,3]. In general, lipid content amounts to 1.6% -3.02% at 14% moisture in brown rice [4][5][6].…”

“…In general, lipid content amounts to 1.6% -3.02% at 14% moisture in brown rice [4][5][6]. The lipids found in rice, especially unsaturated fatty acids, greatly influence grain appearance and quality [3,[6][7][8][9][10][11]. Changes in the crude fat content of rice are associated with aging and deterioration of rice.…”

“…In addition, a major QTL for protein content in rice, qPC1 , has been cloned and functionally characterized [ 46 ]. A major QTL responsible for crude fat content (FC) in brown rice, qCFC5 , is located on chromosome five [ 47 ]. QTLs controlling FC are governed by time-dependent gene expression; Wang et al [ 48 ] revealed different expression patterns of FC-related QTLs at the grain filling stage.…”
