QTL analysis of quality traits in an advanced backcross between Prunus persica cultivars and the wild relative species P. davidiana

Abstract: Genetic control of the different attributes involved in peach quality has been investigated in an advanced backcross population derived from a cross between Prunus davidiana clone P1908, a wild parent with poor agronomic performance, and a commercial variety, Summergrand. A total of 24 physical and biochemical traits were investigated. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were detected for all the traits studied. We identified alleles from P. davidiana with agronomically favorable effects regarding fruit and stone s… Show more

“…However, the resolution of QTL mapping in this study did not allow a fine-scale dissection of QTL, so there may be more than one close QTL with pleiotropic effects. Similar QTL clusters associated with fruit quality were reported for other fruit species, such as tomato (Lecomte et al 2004), peach (Quilot et al 2004) and apple (Kenis et al 2008). The greatest difficulty caused by this kind of interaction is to distinguish closely linked QTL, which affect various traits of a single QTL with pleiotropic effects.…”

“…One of them is an intraspecific F 2 peach population derived from a cross between 'Ferjalou Jalousia' and 'Fantasia' , (J Â F), including 208 individuals, previously used for QTL mapping of peach fruit quality (Dirlewanger et al, 2006). The second one is an interspecific advanced backcross progeny (Quilot et al, 2004) from a cross between a peach cultivar 'Summergrand' and P. davidiana clone P1908. One of the resulting F 1 hybrids was backcrossed to 'Summergrand' to obtain a BC 1 progeny.…”

“…For peach, QTLs mapped to LG2 and LG6 (Verde et al, 2002), LG2, LG3 and LG4 (Quilot et al, 2004), and LG1, LG4 and LG6 (Eduardo et al, 2011). The most significant QTLs were detected on LG4 and LG6.…”

“…In spite of this, QTLs for fl owering and ripening time, fruit quality, tree architecture and resistance to pathogens have been reported (Dirlewanger et al, 1996;Abbott et al, 1998;Dirlewanger et al, 1999;Etienne et al, 2002;Quilot et al 2004;Dirlewanger et al, 2006;Lambert et al, 2007;Ogundiwin et al, 2008;Dirlewanger et al, 2009 (Zini et al, 2005;Dunemann et al, 2009;Dunemann et al, 2012;Khan et al, 2012;Chagne et al, 2012b;Vogt et al, 2013;, texture (King et al, 2000;King et al, 2001;Kenis et al, 2008;Costa et al, 2008;Costa et al, 2010;Longhi et al, 2012;Longhi et al, 2013), ethylene production (Costa et al, 2014), Vitamin C content (Davey et al, 2006;Mellidou et al, 2012;) and fl esh browning (Kenis et al, 2008;Di Guardo et al, 2013). Also, as the cost of map construction was higher, the eff orts were concentrated in a few mapping populations and often they were considered as reference progenies, but these populations only segregated for a few traits.…”
